Driving in my city is not a necessity. We have at least 3 other modes available.

All of which produce the same toxins as cars, I presume.

No. Cars are the least efficient, and dirtiest of all possible modes of transport in the city (with the exception of diesel trucks, of which there aren't many downtown). One full Metro train replaces 500 cars each trip, and takes about as much energy as 4. One bus replaces 50 cars, and DC's busses run on natural gas, which is much cleaner than traditional gas or diesel. This really derails the thread though - if you want to start a thread on transit, I'll be happy to contribute.

Come on super mario. same type of toxins, though not even slightly the same amount. You know this. As for smoking, do what you like.

[QUOTE="super_mario_128"] Oh please. Driving is a necessity nowadays; smoking is not.

Last time I checked driving was a privilege and a luxury. That's not to say smoking is a necessity, or a privilege. But some people do find it to be a luxury, hence why it is known as a vice. Driving isn't a vice, but the side effects on the environment and the human dependency on the technology can be harmful.

I actually feel quite lucky in where I live. Not only is DC one of only two major metro areas in the US that made large expansions to its public transit infrastructure in the post WW2 era (the other being San Francisco), but the city is quite pro non-automobile transit in other ways. We have many bike lanes (of which I use multiple times per week on my commute), and they are actually installing streetcar tracks in some neighborhoods that are underserved by the underground Metro. I have lived here for 3 years, and have only driven in the city twice. One of those two times was helping a car-less friend move.

I've spent the last 10 years of my life attempting to convince my mother and other family members to stop smoking. I don't see that going to stop any time soon as I've seen what it does to people first hand. Majority of my cousins went on to become smokers at early ages. And so you get an idea of how many cousins I have.. my mom has 5 sisters and 4 brothers.

Well if you have asked them for 10 years i think you lost there dude.....instead why dont you drop it and have fun with them instead of being a bit of a know it all

Yeah, I agree, shame on him for trying to prevent his beloved from suffering a premature death. >_>

Just wondering... why'd you create a thread when you knew you had to leave 5 minutes later?

so he could feel SUPER SUPERior while at the gym!

because It's unlikely I'll be thinking about it 2 hours later and not make the post at all..

if you must know on my way back from the gym as I walked home I was imaging what it would be like if sabertooth tigers were running around trying to eat me for dinner.

I don't attack them. I encourage them to involve themselves in better behavior. IT's not like I sit here and say abusive comments to them.

I think people who smoke are committing gradual suicide. When they're smoking they're not pleasant to be around either.

Good intentions or not, being constantly preachy about the way people choose live their lives, especially when it's become very clear nothing you can say wil change their minds, can be extremely annoying and appears very holier than thou.

Its their life and their decision. I'm tired of some of the people who don't smoke thinking they are so much better people than smokers.

Some people like to relax by smoking, i see nothing wrong with that.

It's really not like that. and besides what you're saying.. is similar in form to what I'm saying..only in the other direction. and that's why I find people who smoke even more confusing.. they complain about a prejudice against them for their habit... and in turn practice the same form of prejudice against non smokers.

allowing others to be.. and never challenging them to be better people or consider alternative realities.. is one of the most careless things anybody can do. I understand some people would prefer to be left alone and not have somebody that actually cared about their well being.. or rather surround themselves with people that will reinforced their own realities. But I refuse to be apart of that. And at the end of the day.. if people don't like me for that. I don't mind. Anyways, I don't badger them. But you can continue to make that assumption. I'm much more subtle with them. And simply because they haven't stopped smoking. doesn't mean I should start to approve of the behavior or enable them to be involved in that behavior.

It's really not like that. and besides what you're saying.. is similar in form to what I'm saying..only in the other direction. and that's why I find people who smoke even more confusing.. they complain about a prejudice against them for their habit... and in turn practice the same form of prejudice against non smokers.

Our problem isn't with people who don't smoke, it's with people who seem to make it their soul purpose in life to annoy us smokers. If you don't smoke that's fine, I couldn't care less. Just don't go lectureing me about what I'm doing to my own body.

their purpose is not to annoy you. that's like me saying well that guy over there is smoking.. he's doing it to annoy me. I could easily believe something along those lines.. but I don't.

I could care less if they blow the smoke in my face or smoke in the first place, but it does bother me when they leave the buds for the cigarettes lying everywhere. :x Smoker here, btw.SeraphimGoddess

Got to agree with you on this one. Pisses me off everytime I see a fellow smoker toss a butt out their car window. Makes me want to get out of my car with a lit one in my mouth, pick up their butt and hand it back to them.

Being a smoker does not entitle you to litter.

I know it's not their purpose, but it's annoying when someone I don't even know walks up to me while I'm enjoying a cigarrette and pukes up some fact about cigarrettes that they memorized for some reason. The funniest is when someone just says to me "That's bad for you you know". Really? I had no idea, I thought they were a good source of calcium!

Its their life and their decision. I'm tired of some of the people who don't smoke thinking they are so much better people than smokers.

Some people like to relax by smoking, i see nothing wrong with that.

I do not mind smokers as long as they don't smoke in my face and make me inhale that crap. :P

Aside from that, I have no problems with them. It's their body, their lungs, their health. They are adults and their decision is their alone.

I'm pretty good about non smokers. I will not smoke around kids. If someone did ask me to stop because it was bothering them, i would.

My only problem with smokers is when they smoke around me and if they try to pressure me into smoking. Otherwise I think it's a personal choice and I don't mind.

Emo your family isnt stupid. If you have been bugging them for 10 years about stopping smoking, even subtley, they know and arent going to stop. You are probably just annoying them.

You sound like a brother of mine who calls way way to often. Everytime hes on the phone the rest of the family makes fun of him. Soon as hes off the phone my mom talks about how bad he was whining. Hes hated but we fake smiles and be nice to him cause in the long run if we told him to shut up he would just end up being 10 times worse. You seem alot like him, get off your high horse already and leave your family to enjoy what they want. Its self-righteous of you to tell your mom what she should do with her life even if you do not like it.

Also in your OP you mentioned how smokers dont think about the long term and only want momentary instant satisfaction basically. Whats wrong with that? Im going to go have a twinkie, im not going to sit here and think about how its going to make me fat, im going to enjoy the damn twinkie and have a happy moment in my life. Same goes with smoking. I could die tommorow randomly but at least I had a moment of joy today. I quit smoking 3 weeks ago and you made me want a cig so bad >< (quit cause its gotten to expensive)
