Both came well before we knew the consequences of tobacco smoking.

Barack Obama smokes. He seems fairly intelligent to me.

So long as you can afford, financially, the long-term consequences of your habit I don't care.

It's when people who can't afford it smoke anyway. That bothers me, because I end up paying for their inevitable health problems.

When the tax on cigarettes is at the point where it can feasibly cover every person in the US that will eventually go to the hospital for their problems, that is when I will be completely ok with smoking. Until then my feelings on it will remain negative.

So what? I was just pointing out that smart people did (and I'm sure some do now) indeed smoke.

Freud was far from intelligent. He was a drug addict with reasonable ability to write down his psychoanylsis that have been for the most part dismissed as crediable science. And I'm sure Einstein, knowing what we know today about smoking would tell you himself that it's a stupid behavior. A smart person would never continue smoking while knowing the effects it has on repressing the air ways and the cardiovascular system.

Dying and cancer are trivial compared to that.

Ok, this is getting a little crazy here. I quoted someone who said smart people don't smoke. I just used two iconic figures from the top of my head to make a point. Now we're getting into them doing drugs and not knowing the dangers of smoking like we know now. Now really, do you think all intelligent people out there don't smoke? I mean that is hard to believe.

I don't really think much of it either way. I don't smoke myself, but if others need to smoke around me it certainly doesn't bother me at all.

Same. When I have the time and cash I will be getting another one between the years 87-93 to restore.

I don't see any benefit in it. I had friends in high school who smoked weed all the time, so I could've bought a few joints if I wanted to (but I didn't see the point).

In Kazakhstan, cigarettes are good for you.

I used to smoke and did for 20 years and I quit 9 years, 5 months and 14 days ago. I actually threw about half a pack out when I did. I am glad I did. Earlier this year I found out my Pops has lung cancer. I also found out that his sister (my aunt) had it and died from it earlier this year and that their father had died from it. My Grandma (their Mom) died from emphysema, all from smoking. My asthma has gotten worse and on cold days I have a hard time breathing. I literally choke and gasp for breathe if people are smoking around me at that time of year. Stand downwind of me if you want to smoke and want to keep killing yourself.

There is a company in Chattanooga Tennessee that makes their employees go out to the sidewalk next to the street to smoke, no smoking near the building (same for the company I work for, no smoking near the building). I see more and more places not allowing smoking near entrances.

I also did the math when I quit. I figured I spend about $1200 a year buying cigarettes (3 cartons a month orginally and that went to 4 a month before I finally quit). I just added it up, and if one bought a carton of cigarettes a week here in Nacogdoches Texas, they would spend about $3000 a year. What could you do with that kind of cabbage?

I think it's difficult for people to quit, even though you know it's bad for you if you're addicted then not smoking leads to strong cravings that are the most difficult to control, the craving is just something you can't ignore, like if your thirsty and you want a drink, it's very uncomfortable to go without, or if you're hungry and need something to eat, if you ignore those cravings it causes extreme discomfort, going without a cigarette is the same way. I think it's very difficult to quit and I think non-smokers give the worst quitting advice ever so if you're a non-smoker nagging your friends they're probably appreciate it if you shut-up. Right now I'm quitting with e-cigs, I've been doing it for two months and it's been the two easiest months of non-smoking ever. So for any smokers out there thinking of quitting in the future I'd definitely recommend it.

My girlfriend smokes, and it's f***ing disgusting. As long as she's not drinking, she only smokes one or two a day. If she was a heavier smoker, I wouldn't have got into a relationship with her.

While of course I agree it's unhealthy, I don't think it's that expensive to anyone on a middle income. A pack of Marlboro's is, what, $5? If you're a pack-a-day smoker, that's about as much as a fancy coffee every morning. If you're a two-pack a day smoker, that's as much as one cocktail per evening at a nicer bar.

Here a pack costs 3 to 4 euros but the "middle" income here is probably not as high as the "middle" income in the usa.

Btw that's not just my opinion, since I have never smoked and have no personal experience. I just hear that from several smokers I have talked to. Not saying its an objective truth. It possibly is true here, maybe not in the usa.

Also I am not singling out smoking among other habits.

I just asked Miss Palantas (aka, Tar Lungs), and a pack of premium cigarettes (Marlboros, Parliaments) is $5.15. I guess it depends how many you smoke and what your income is. I can certainly see how it's an income drain for poorer people, since it's something they "have" to have.

I'll never understand why. I've smoke before the odd one or two nights, just relaxes you a little, but not worth the health issues.
