How is that racist? A religion that caused thousands of people to die at that site now is going to build a place of worship for people of that religion? That doesn't seem odd at all to you?

Pirate700

The religion cause nothing. A few extremists caused it, and some of those thousands of people were Muslims themselves. It is not directly on top of or across from the site. It is a community center, not just a mosque.

That's true but what he said still wasn't racist. Muslims aren't a race. Any race "can" become Muslim.

Incorrect. The word race does not mean the same as ethnicity or nationality although it can be used in those regards. Race simply means a "kind of people", such that can fit in a classification. Muslim is a classification, therefore they can be called a race.

Oh don't worry, Catholicism has that covered too.

Edit: Molestation =/= sexual harassment.

worlock77

That was the word I was looking for.

Does Catholicism have any incidents in modern history concerning mass murder? (Serious question, I don't follow religion very closely)

I don't know if they were Catholics specifically, but during the Serbian War in the mid 90's there were acts of genocide commited by Serbian Christians against Bosniak Muslims.

I must also point out I don't think any mainstream religion has been responsible for mass murders. It is individual members or those churches acting in the name of the church but the church itself is not responsible. Just like Muslims weren't responsible for 9/11 and The Catholic Church wasn't responsible for the Spanish Inquisition. Individual members give churches bad names.

I saw this video a few weeks ago (Ironically, from a thread with this subject on OT) and thought the creator made a lot of good points

ferrari2001

Did...Did that guy in the video just compare Islam to Nazism?

I wouldn't take that guy seriously. He's what I would call a professional flamer who makes point specifically on his viewpoint to piss people off.

I chuckled a few times at how stupid some of his statements were...But then he got the to the Islam/Nazism comparison and yeah, it became grade-A tinfoil hattery.

I should also note that I'm not attempting to place blame for atrocities of those wars on religion specifically. That whole mess had many fascets to it.

Sorry, but I couldn't find a good point in that. The comparison pretty much killed his credibility.

They gave the Nazis a wink and a nod during the Holocaust.

Ugh... the misconceptions. Three blocks is not "across from." And a "community centre" is not a terrorist training facility... as some people seem to think its going to be. I don't understand how people can be "offended" by a group wanting to build on land they legally purchased before members saying they are part of the same religion attacked a facility, where those looking to build the centre, had family and friends also die in the attacks.

BUT ITS ALL A CONSPIRACY! *foil hat*

Not that big of a deal. But if that many people are so offended, why don't they just build it in a less controversial location?

They're building a community center with a mosque in it a few blocks away from ground zero. It's in no way offensive and anyone who finds it to be so needs to do some fact checking.

Do you know how hard it would be to get another piece of undeveloped, central Manhattan property? And how costly?

I don't think there's ever a history of mass murder. You have the crusades but that is massively different than the 9/11 attacks we are talking about. During the Crusade they were fighting other militants so it's not really murder. The only thing that would come close would be the inquisition. But the church only approved around 30 executions the rest were approved by non-church government officials why acted in the name of the church.

Yeah, the Crusades came to mind but that wasn't an act of terror. I don't recall any events of a terrorist event involving Catholicism

Terrorism is one of those terms that people keep trying to define, but always fail to use in any consistent manner. In recent years it has become a blanket term to refer to any oppositional action or mentality, such as when many people used the term to refer to the tension between the US and Iran. It is coming to the point where the term is going to be as hollow as the words pagan and barbarian. Pagan is used to refer to "other religions that aren't my own", barbarian for "other cultures that aren't my own", and now terrorism for "hostile actions that aren't my own". Aside from this hollow common usage, the only thing that can be agreed upon for a definition is that the act must be done for the purpose causing terror in the populace. Problem here is that you have to know motivation for an action. Even here it is blurry though... does it have to be solely for that purpose? What if the perpetrator stands to gain something else from it, and simply considers the fact that it riles people up to be "icing on the cake"? Is an action taken with other motives, but acknowledged to have the result of causing terror considered to be terrorism?

I think people are letting their own ignorance offend themselves, that's what I think. And it's tragic this coincides with America's new right wing efforts to condemn Islam as a cult and practice Quran book burning events on this upcoming 9/11 anniversary; I mean absolutely nothing constructive could ever come from such myopic and sacrilegious acts advocated by this country's anti-intellectual establishments. Furthermore, Islamic extremists will most likely be able to utilize the publicity of such events for recruitment, and most likely result in putting American & other allied troops in harm's way.

Its unnecesary. If I had the money I would build some kind of pork shop right next to their mosque and say "oopsies it was just a coincidence!"

I think that if they've bought the land they can build a 30 floor high building that looks like male genitalia and have a Soviet Union flag ontop of it if they want to.

I find it genuinely sad that in this day and age all it takes for a large number of people to hate another large group of people is a handful of terrorists and an idiot given a soapbox on a news channel. When looking back at the cold war in history, you can't help but feel slightly embarrassed for all the people who bought into the ridiculous red-scare hysteria. Yet when we stop and examine our own world in this supposedly more modern, enlightened age, it's still happening right now.

I think if new yorkers are so upset about it, they should offer to pay double the worth of the plot of land to buy the plot.
