My mom used to live in Montreal for several years. She tells me its a great city. I'll probably visit there one day, until then no opinion of it really...
I live right on the edge of Quebec where it touches Ottawa. I've lived in Ottawa my whole life but I moved here a couple eyars ago. Quebecers are usually nicer and more family oriented than the rest of Canada (from my experience). Most Canadians like to make fun of Quebec sometimes, but overall most Canadians want Quebec to stay in Canada, some Quebecers don't feel that way. Although the separatist movement is the weakest its been in a long time.
California isn;t considered part of America by some Americans?Don't know much about it. but from what I hear many Canadians almost don't see it as part of Canada. It's like the California of Canada.

Then the country would be divided into three, it would be a disaster. It would perhaps be best if Quebec split from the rest of Canada.

I like Quebec alot,if I had to move out of the province because of seperation,I would miss Montreal a whole lot.Montreal has great nightlife, and the food are some of the best in North America.
I live about 150 miles south of Quebec. I've been there once as a kid, to Montreal, and found the people there to be rude and unfriendly if you don't speak a word of French (sort of like the French themselves).
I've driven behind people with Quebec plates, and wonder if they actually learn to drive up there, or if they just throw them behind the wheel at 16 and say "Here are the pedals, here's the wheel, just give it your best shot and don't crash." By contrast, I've seen drivers with Ontario plates drive competently and respectfully (if a bit slow).
There's a local highway overpass that gets hit by a Quebecois trucker at least once a month, as if the maximum clearance doesn't apply to them because they're from Quebec.
Really, what the hell's wrong with Quebec?

Well if you leave from separation it won't be long before you beg to come back.
I was in Quebec City for a school trip in the 90's. Very cool city. And I spent a month on the Gaspe Peninsula in 2007. I drove through Quebec and it has much more to look at than Southern Ontario does that's for sure.
The only thing I didn't like about was the way I was looked at because my car had Ontario plates. They also make it hard for me to get a cushy Gov. job because I don't want to learn their crappy language. It's not even real French!
I think from Quebecois point of view, they feel constantly dominated by the English-speaking community.
Sort of like "The rest of the world speaks English, why don't you?"
That doesn't give equal respect to their language or heritage, and presupposes the eventuality that they will forget French someday.
Meanwhile nobody thinks that Canadians will someday forget English.
That is the basis of the Quebec seperatist movement.
I think this is also valid in Europe, where everyone is equal but English is a little more equal.
All across Europe, schoolchildren are taught English as a second language.
But do the British ever bother to learn another language.
In most countries this is seen as a form of cultural imperialism, forcing the whole world to see thru an English-speaking lense that leaves no room for non-English ideas and concepts.
The French and Germans run the EU not the British also Luxumbourg and Belgium speak French too. Some French are OK with people speaking English, I think it's just Parisians which get pissed off because the streets are full of thousands of tourists ambling along when they're late for work. Oh and in the UK it's pretty standard to do foreign languages in pirmary and seconday school, at my secondary it was mandatory to do 2 foreign languages and take one as a GCSE.I think this is also valid in Europe, where everyone is equal but English is a little more equal.

How long ago was that?

If they did that it would be a little strip from Montreal to Quebec City, with no economy. Theres no other country that would allow a party that wants to seperate be part of its legislature
9 years ago now.... **** i feel old.... They had that policy when my sister started too who's 2 years older than me.How long ago was that?

Ah, I left 5 years ago and we had none of that; though I did take French at GCSE.
Maybe my school was just terrible.
Is Quebec even large enough to support itself as its own country? Canada as a whole barely has any people as it is.

No it's not. That's the arrogance of the French. We had a referendum in the 90's. The vote was 51/49, or 52/48 for no separation. At least half the province knew they need to be a part of Canada to survive.
If they left they'd be sandwiched in Canada. It's best to stay put and keep receiving money that they already need to survive as a province from the rest of Canada.... Ontario to now. I heard some news on people saying Ontarioshould become it's own Country a couple years ago but now we're taking money from the Feds thanks to our current Premier and the immigrants that keep voting for him..........

I owned a business in Ontario, and we were required by law to produce all of our materials in both languages. 30 minutes down the road our competitors in Quebec didn't even have to bother with English, as there are no bi-lingual laws in Quebec.
It's like the street signs in Ontario: English AND French. For instance, Rue Water St. Work and construction signs also had both languages. But once you get into Quebec, all English either disappears or shrinks down to like 1/3 the size of the French lettering.
I know, language laws, blah blag...in my opinion, if you have to rely on law to keep your language alive, you're already too late. But yeah, it's the hypocracy that drives me nuts.

Not only that, but Eastern Canada would be totally devastated, the country would be split into three essentially.Singapore and Norway are smaller and are doing pretty well for themselves. Is Quebec even large enough to support itself as its own country? I've never been there, so I'm basing all my opinion of assumptions, but they seem to be very conceited and are trying too hard to hang on to their "heritage". The only way they are similar to the French is that they patronize people who don't speak French and are extremely rude. stanleycup98To be fair, it's their french-Canadian heritage they hang on to. They abandoned European French heritage a long time ago: intact many in Quebec still despise France after being abandoned to the English.
I also don't want seperation. Then we will have Canada split in two.Fundai
Don't you find it hypocritical that the Bloc wants to seperate because they are a "unique culture", but those same people would not allow the native Inuit in the northern parts of their provence to seperate from Quebec?
Hunh.

I'll never really understand the hatred for the rest of Canada from some of them. What do they gain by being their own country? The right to speak French and that's about it, everything else is a loss. Quebec is a beautiful province and I really don't mind the french as long as they speak in english when talking to me. :P

I do find it hypocritical. The only thing I like about the Bloq though is I know what they want, seperation, unlike other parties that could just be lying to us each election. It does look like we won't see a unified front for seperation for a while now because of the last election though. :PWhat do they gain by being their own country? The right to speak French and that's about it, everything else is a loss. Mikey132They can draft a nifty new constitution allowing free poutines for all citizens.

lol. And a new imaginary NHL team for that new staduim in Quebec City called the Nordicks!
My city took your hockey team and then won two Stanley Cups. Jealous?famicommander
Who's your city? I know the Nordiques never won a cup and that's a useless argument againts a Habs fan considering the can say "We've won the most Cups...Jealous?!"
I hate the Habs for the record.
EDIT: I'm a Leafs fan that just defended Habs fan.... so ashamed....so ashamed!

Do you live in Quebec? I really have no problem with Quebec except for the die hard separatist and the way I get treated when I'm in that province.

I live in Denver. The Nordiques moved to Denver, Colorado in 1995 and became the Colorado Avalanche. They then took the Cup in 1996 and 2001, in the process setting the all time record 487 consecutive 100% sellouts (every game for the first 11 years the team was here) and winning 8 consecutive Division Titles.[QUOTE="Mikey132"][QUOTE="famicommander"]My city took your hockey team and then won two Stanley Cups. It's quite a damn shame they had to move since they finished almost first or first the year before they moved. Think they had 104 points on the season. The Nordiques could have, should have won a cup. Problem is they moved, no longer a Quebec team. Is a Thrashers fan goingto say they won the Cup if the Jets do in a few years? Will Jets fans say they won a cup if Phoenix goes all the way this year..... I think not!
EDIT: wait, they beat the Maple Leafs on sellouts? When did the Maple Leafs not sell out a game in the last 20 years......
