I always see people whacking their pack of cigarettes against their hand before opening them. What exactly is the purpose of that?

It's called "packing"/ Packing your pack is done to condense the tobacco in its little paper cylinder. With each puff of a packed cigarette, you get thicker smoke, and presumably, a better "buzz" from your smoke. While not the most important thing in the world, an un-packed smoke will taste the same as a packed one, they'll just burn a little bit faster

it packs the tobacco in the cigarette better. This way, when you flick the ash, the actual ember does not go flying along with half of the cigs tobacco

Oh come on, you clearly don't understand us. Stop trying to shove your "facts"... There are benefits (feels great, it's relaxing and very enjoyable at times). Not everyone smoke a full pack of cigarettes a day, I smoke 2 cigarettes a day and I don't think I'll die any earlier because of this, especially if I stop smoking at some point (which I don't think will be that difficult for me). You don't tell people eating peanuts that they're stupid because it can give them cancer do you?

Edit: It's to tighten the tobacco inside the cigarettes. I've never done it because I find cigarettes perfect the way they are without it.

No, They should keep smoking so they die sooner and so non smokers don't have to put up with that crap

Look at this, all the 12 year olds have come out to play...

But in reality, I don't understand why non smokers have to bash smokers so much. It gets to the point of being borderline retarded. Smokers don't do anything to you, but you still hate them to death. Why?

Anyways, back to the topic. Packing a cig, joint whatever is said to give a more solid smoke by moving the tobacco closer together. Its kinda a culture thing now since I don't notice a packed or unpacked one...

It seems to me that it only feels good because you're addicted. When you became addicted something within you changed. The old you does not find smoking good, relaxing nor enjoy it. If I could change my psychology such that i found fat people attractive, i wouldn't do it... even though I could say after, hey, you know what, fat people really turn me on so leave me be. :|

Wrong. Nicotine is a physically active stimulant. Being addicted or not is just a side effect. If you had to smoke a cigarette now, it would provide you with a buzz. This has nothing to do with addiction.

the whacking of a pack of cigarettes is designed to draw even more attention to your absurd behavior than what is possible by simply just smoking them without doing that..

I refuse to believe that the addiction isn't mostly responsible for the smoker's enjoyment. I doubt I'd enjoy a cigarette now as much as a frequent smoker.

Its not about "enjoying" it (go back to your original post). Its about the effect it produces. Regardless of addiction, nicotine is a drug which effects you physically.

The "enjoyment" you speak of is the lulling of the craving that smokers experience when they havn't had a cigarette for a while. Nicotine attaches itself to the receptors in the brain, and make you crave it when you havn't had any for a while. The effects it produce are a completely separate issue to what you are talking about.

I have a degree in Chemistry, but feel free to believe what you want.

Dude, please.

If smoking only feels good because they are addicted, no one would ever smoke long enough to get addicted.

Of course "the old you" finds smoking tobacco to be enjoyable. Otherwise, after trying it, people would not keep on doing it.

And in fact, the "buzz" is more so enjoyable before smoking becomes a routine habit/addiction. Not that I advocate it, for obvious reasons.

Yeah, this whole "smoking doesn't do anything for you, you only think it does because you're addicted" notion just boggles my damn mind.

Does anyone say the same thing about crack? Do you see anyone ACTUALLY being ignorant enough to say to a crackhead, "it's not like crack even makes you feel good; you just think it does because you're addicted"?

Or people calling it a "fad drug" that people only use in order to "look cool". Really? Is that why people have been smoking tobacco since before Jesus Christ was born? That's one hell of a long-lasting "fad".

It's a recreational drug. It makes people feel good, then it leads to addiction. The same applies to cocaine, heroin, and alcohol. If alcohol didn't make people feel good, no one would ever get addicted since there'd be no reason for them to drink alcohol long enough to get addicted. EXACT same thing applies to caffeine, nicotine, and cocaine.

You personally? Never. Others? Well, frequently.

Look some people just hate smoking for whatever their reason. Some people just hate smoking. I find that the haters of smoking say I shouldn't have to be around that. I remember when my town and neighboring towns fought to ban smoking in public places. I didn't like that. I feel like smokers have the right to smoke.

But then there are other people. Like me. Currently I am undergoing chemotherapy. The doctors told me not to smoke as well as not be around smoking. I loathe the day I have to ask someone (a co-worker or a boss) to not smoke around me because of this because I feel that they have the right to smoke

Now that's just cold. What if someone you cared about smoked because they couldn't help it but are desperately trying to quit? Nicotine is addictive and that's what keeps smokers coming back. It's a drug that calms a human being's nerves if they are addicted to it.

That's all completely ignoring the point that not smoking around people who don't like smoke is a matter of common courtesy, and that there's nothing inherent in cigarettes which keeps a smoker from exercising common courtesy.

Hey, I wear shoes. Is it fair to demonize people who wear shoes because some dude once tracked dog poop all over your living room carpet?

I am sick and tired of smokers getting hit with the blame for what SOME other smokers do. Some gun owners shoot people. Does that make it fair for me to look at a person who just bought a gun, and call him a "murderer"?

How are you trying to use inherent? Like there is nothing in the cigarettes that directly make a smoker not exercise common courtesy? I mean something in the cigarettes that literally make someone not perfrom common courtesy.

Or are you saying cigarette smoke in the public air is incaple of harming others so consequently smokers do and can perform common courtesy?

I'm saying that common courtesy dictates that one shouldn't smoke around people who don't like smoke. Same way that common courtesy says that one shouldn't shoot people with one's gun.

And yeah...being a "smoker" doesn't make you kill anyone with secondhand smoke any more than being a "shooter" makes you take your gun and shoot it at a dude just for ****s and giggles.

That's complete and utter BS, no psychiatrist or therapist in his right mind would prescribe cigarettes (unless the person is a recovering addict, or is using it as a placebo).

Then you go to the non-smoking elevator/cafe/restaurant/tram/train/bus/car/office

Again, nobody forces you to go near it. You do so of your own free will.

[QUOTE="psychobrew"] Nicoteine helps with many mental disorders, such as depression (of course, it can cause depression when you quit). It helps schiozophrenia and ADD as well. Af course, there are much better drugs for these things, but some people that smoke are actually self medicating. There's also the social side of it as well.Mochyc
That's complete and utter BS, no psychiatrist or therapist in his right mind would prescribe cigarettes (unless the person is a recovering addict, or is using it as a placebo).

Who said anything about prescribing? I know I didn't. Studies have shown, however, that nicotine enhances alertness and concentration, helps relaxation and reduces anxiety, acts as an anti depressant (stimulates dopamine, which also helps schizophrenics), reduces hallucinations (again, why schizophrnics usually smoke), and increases social interaction.

There's a reason that 90% of schizophrenics smoke, 70% of people with bipolar disorder, 60% with major depression, 60% with post tramatic stress disorder, and 56% with a panic disorder. Drugs are now being designed to target nicotine receptors for people with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Similar drugs have been created that work as extremely effective pain killers.

I'm not advocating smoking, but to deny there are any bennefits is giving in to anti smoking propaganda.

[QUOTE="SolidSnake35"] It seems to me that it only feels good because you're addicted.

Uh, no. That's just wrong.

What if you were in a elevator/cafe/restaurant/tram/train/bus/car/office and forced to inhale it?

What if you were walking in a store and you needed to get before it closed and someone is just blowing smoke everywhere? :P

Exhale as you walk in. Mission accomplished! :3
