Learn it like I did, the Marine Corps way! If that isn't an option, Ninjitsu or Jujitsu, whatever it be called, it looks legit!

Krav Maga. An Isreali developed martial art, it focuses on very quick, brutal and efficient types of attacks for very practical situation.

If you want to train for street fights then get good at running fast because your probably going to get stabbed or shot trying to karate kick some homeboys down the block.

Boxing, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo, and Sambo would be at the top of my list.

depends how old you are. judo and wrestling are extremely tough to master at an older age since they rely a lot on fluid movement and memorizing specific movements of the body. basically, you will get destroyed in tournaments by people who have been doing it their whole lives. i suggest brazilian jiu-jitsu. it is extremely fun and while all fights start up top they end on the floor. it's also better suited for adults due to the serious risk of breaking bones with submissions. for self defense though, i suggest muay-thai. "art of the eight limbs."

No matter what style you choose, just make sure you check the instructors and their credentials before you sign up. Also visit the gym before you join to get a feel for the instructors and the students there.

The one that kicks the most ass. What you need to do is do some research on each style and find out which one suits you more.

You said 'or writing something really important.' If you aren't going to take the time to write properly, why would our advice be important to you? I stand by my suggestion of the sheep style because you are wasting your own time fishing for our advice when you are capable of making the informed decision. You're lazy and this isn't important to you; therefore, you are wasting our time and yours by asking.

People target easy prey, it doesn't matter so much WHAT you know, but if you are good at it, they won't want to pick on you.

I say learn to effectively fist-fight (box) as a basis. If you get good at that, it's better than nothing, it's simple to learn, and simple to practice.

All you need to know is keep your hands up by your jaw to protect it, the jaw is the danger zone, punch with both hands, footwork is crucial, those are the basics, but the basics are important.

Muay Thai seems like a good one but thats jsut cause im starting it next year. Really you have to look for a style that you like and would enjoy. do u want a more grappling or throw orientated style or a brawling style? Its jsut all about wat u wanna focus on.

This is where boxing is shown to be a horrible style for self defence, boxing doesnt protect your body (e.g kidneys and such) making it bad for self defence, if his looking for self defence courses he shoudl probs take a self defence course. If this psot isnt covering self defence then carry on.

Yeah right.

Those self-defense classes are a joke, where someone conveniently grabs you on the shoulder and then you 'step-by-step' carry out a procedure to put them into a wrist-lock? It doesn't work that way. Learning to box and fist fight will build up his confidence, so that when he does get jumped, he'll have some reflexes trained.

Those "grab my wrist and maneuver me into this position" things don't actually work, they are difficult to learn, tedius, and when it comes to it, you probably won't remember how to do it anyway. Throwing punches is much easier and simpler, and getting good at that will be much more effective due to the simplicity.

If you look hard you can find gyms in Boston. Joe Lauzon, a UFC fighter actually has a gym out in Bridgewater, if that interests you.

And by the way, I live in Boston, in the city, and have lived here my whole life. Its not a violent place compared to other places, and the only way you would get into constant fights is if you were a complete douchebag. So I get the feeling your either a douchebag or a bold faced liar, one of the two and there are no other options if you are always getting into "street fights".

Depends which course you are doing whihc jsut shows ignorance on your part of what self defence courses are out there. My friend undertook a quite different self defence course to the one you described which i was unable to take part in due to me being under 18 and the theme of the course. My friend tried out these on me and has also been hurt rather badly in the course in practice. These various techniques range frome key areas tos trike such as throat, weakest ribs, easiest armbreaking manuvers agaisnt knife attacks, etc.

This is far mroe useful than boxing whihc leaves your entire midrift exposed, once someone gets stabbed in the side they go into shock (the majority of the time) and no matter how good your reflexes are due to "boxing" you will be unable to do anything.

Boxing as a sport is still a great form of cardio and competative sport yet as a foundation for self defence is a horrible choice if the goal of self defence is choosen.

what spot do you live in boston..different areas in dorchester(not all it can be nice)..and mattapan are acually pretty violent,..high crime rate places..and yea im most likely going to go along with boxing...it doesnt provide ways to get outa different situations..like a gun in your face or a knife fight but itl build the coordination to further into something that does later on, so thanks for the help i made my choice

If you are interested in "street fighting" like you said, then I guess the choice would be between Muay Thai, Jiujitsu, Krav Maga and Sambo.

Being big does not necessarily mean you'd be bad at grappling. I'd suggest sambo if your area has it. If not, go for regular boxing or wrestling.
