try it yourself, like i did as a result of this thread. it would only delete the shortcut to my computer, just like when you delete your shortcut to word or whatever applications you have on your desktop.
It just deletes the icon. All those icons tell your computer where the directory of that folder and information are. You don't cause any permanent damage by deleting that icon because it's just a shortcut.
