What has caused more harm Religion or Science?
This topic is locked from further discussion.
Technically science has, but I'm not complaining. Science is the reason I don't have to worry about dying from diseases that people used to die from ages ago.
Religion has had it's fair share of negative impacts in this world as well though. The mass suicides in Jonestown is a good example of one of them.

so are the crusaides, holy war, whats been going on the " holy land" forever, and the catholic church holding back scientific evidence ( gallaleio anyone?) during the dark agesIt was neither science nor religion but it is the MIND of illiterates and ignorants which always misinterprets things which lead to path of destruction.

I can't tell if you're trying to ask a question or make a statement. o_o;;
Religion can give people the motive to do horrible or kind things. science gives people the tools to do horrible or kind things. So pretty much its the people who decide in both cases
Hard to answer. The technology produced by science is an enabler. It has made wars easier and bigger; roads, weapons, medical, navigation, etc.
while religion is a powerful motivator, technology is what caused the growth of places like Europe and Asia and as a result larger and more deadly wars compared to the Americas.
I'm thinking Science because of nukes but wern't we at war constantly during the earlier times because of religion? That could of fuel the hatred for other countries in the future.Pvt_r3dBut doesn't religion also fuel love and forgiveness.

I think its more of both mixture Religion and Science, actually, but you're going the right way, PVT. However, Religion is about forgiving, although Science....Has...NUKES :D
Religion is a set, unchanging, way of thinking
Science is an understanding/invention process.
Not comparable,
Say science comes up with a way in which to create bronze nails. If those nails are used to nail people to a cross of wood by the religious who does the blame fall on?

I'm getting closer to enlightenment!!Technically, science. The sword, the crossbow, the catapult, gun powder, fighter air craft, tanks, nuclear weaponry, etc, etc.
But on the same note, you could also say that it has saved FAR more life through medicine, and medical practice.
Science has also made our lives far more easy and enjoyable (the printing press, harnessable electricty, lamps, water treatment, cars, airplanes, the internet, MP3 players, movies, etc, etc).
But if your question is, what has more harm been caused in the name of, then the answer would be religion.
[QUOTE="jointed"]Define science please.Pvt_r3dAnything man has made. So art would also qualify as science? You need to be more precise since you can't compare a religion with that...they intertwine.
Nuclear Weapons are an example of science being the cause for death. The bomb dropped in Hiroshima was dropped mainly to test the destructive power of the bomb. Or how about the 560,000 Chinese people killed and tortured for experiments by the Japanese? Many times they would perform vivisections on them!Technically, science. The sword, the crossbow, the catapult, gun powder, fighter air craft, tanks, nuclear weaponry, etc, etc.

Anything man has made that is not Art. So if a priest kills an innocent man with a sword, is it science or religion that scores?

Or how about this any technology that is created for the purpose of killing counts as science.
Nukes, Bombs, guns, and human experiments all have all killed more than any holy war has.I believe religion has caused the most harm out of the two. But at the end of the day, humans are to blame for almost all harm.

So was WW2 or WW1 caused by religion?religion is the root of all wars and troubles
nations fighting each other in the name of stupid religion

Just like countless thousands aren't and haven't been dying in the Middle East for centuries over religious strife - i.e. Israel/Palestine? I imagine the genocides in Somalia, Nigeria, Uganda and Sudan were irrelevant. The killing of hundreds of thousands of Buddhists and Hindus in Sri Lanka over the Tamil Tiger uprising of the last 30 years.... that's not counted?
Bosnia, Kosovo, Russia and Chechnya... these regions that have bore witness to countless deaths, again in large part due to religious conflict between Russian and Serbian Orthodox Christians and Muslims.
Oh and let's not forget Northern Ireland... and these are just conflicts happening now or that have happened recently.
Perhaps worth thinking about. This isn't just about The Crusades.
WWI and WWII were political and were not the cause of science. So technically your points regarding the wars are invalid.

Religion does make an awfully convenient reason, doesn't it. It's amazing what people are capable of doing if they can convince themselves that it's for a 'higher power'.
and no WW2 was not because of religion but then again it wasnt because of science
Apples to Oranges. What kind of question is this? What has caused more harm Religion or Science?

60 million people died in WW2 alone. Counting all the crusades together 1 to 2 million people died.[QUOTE="illegalimigrant"]

Not when people use those nukes, bombs, guns and experimental procedures (though rare in the last case) in the name of religion or for religious agendas.raynimrod

Science had a lot to do with it. Do you think hitler would have attacked if he did not have superior weapons technology?[QUOTE="raynimrod"]

While neither science or religion has been the ultimate cause for pain and suffering throughout human history both have been used as excuses and justifications for said pain and suffering. Of the two I'd say it would be religion. There's even a saying which came up during the Renaissance: "No phrase has caaused more death and suffering as deus vult."
Ok add to the count all the deaths that have been caused by any weapon created for death. I think that counts as science. Who will have more deaths?[QUOTE="illegalimigrant"]
[QUOTE="raynimrod"]
Yeah, and I'm guessing none of them were killed because they were Jewish?
