Well, science has certainly SAVED more lives than religion... but both are pretty applicable when it comes to war. Religion is a strong motive that has existed since the beginning of civilization, but technology is the tool of destruction.
Ok please add them up cause combining just WW1 and 2 you have about 100 million dead. And religious wars are the minority. Wars are fought primarily for land and greed. Religious wars are the few.illegalimigrantWhy does everyone say wars are fought primarily for land? All wars, ever war that ever was, was fought for power. The vast majority of why people feel the way they do and do what they do is due to a need for power within oneself and their environment.

I like the extensive list of sources he uses, the way he acknowledges that it was not only Hitler and Communism that caused the only secular conflicts in all of history, and so and so forth.

I found five events on that list that weren't even religious.
Just because a war isn't base don religion doesn't automatically mean science is to blame for it.I found five events on that list that weren't even religious.

Well, doesn't science technically lead to deaths from car accidents, gunshots, bombings, etc.?deathwish124Science is not the one driving the car, shooting the gun, dropping the bombs, etc. Science has made a effort to make things safer like making car safer with air bags, bullet-proof vests, bomb shelters, etc. So in harm what science do unintentionally, it tries to make up for by saving lives....

Wait; one sentence you say science doesn't do these things, but the next you not only say it does but anthropomorphize it by saying it "tries." :?

Eugenics is killing anybody (race, economic status, fertility, health concerns, etc) in favor of benefiting the human race by intervening with natural selection; it is for all intents and purposes killing in the name of biology.
As for embryos, what too many people consider is irrelevant to me.
Finally, the Japanese experiments were done solely for scientific findings; and in terms of science, what they found was extremely helpful. We still use the information they found.
Religion. The most harm science has ever done is possibly turn a man into something else. Wars have been started over religion.

Unintentionally? I didn't know we made guns for some reason other than killing people. We made guns and bombs to kill people.
But guns and bombs don't kill people. Scientists with research grants do. Ask any soldier or marine or mercenary what they can make, and they probably can't make anything more than a blade or a bow. Its the researchers who are geniuses and masters of knowledge that create all the things we use to kill each other.

lol I did screwed up in my post alittle....:P I meant to say there are people that use science in a harmful way, people try to come up with solutions using science to make things better. Science don't kill people. It's only a tool that people use to become more advance than other people. Scratch my last post because there was a part in it that i forgot to delete...:PEDIT: After reading my post, it still feels like I'm missing something though....:?

Already aware of this. I thought we made guns in order to protect ourselves, not to go and kill people for joy. Which was my point. People are responsible when it comes to using science in a violent way.....well during the time of christ the jews tortured him to the brink of death and then killed him in the most painful way they could think of. then last century hitler massacered millions of jews for what people they will never meet did thousands of years ago to christ. soin my opinion religion has killed more people than any atom bomb has so far. sure bombs kill alot of people but most wars are either about land, money or religion

Just someone saying so.

[QUOTE="illegalimigrant"] I could also say that the crusades were not caused by religion. Since they were cause by politics and land. The crusades were caused by the Byzantine emperor asking for a hand to fight off the invading Turks. Most of the causes were politics and self improvement as there were lands to be conquered. Although its obvious that faith also gave reasons for these men to fight. Just like technology gave reason for Germany to take over Europe in WW2. If you want to get to the root the cause of harm is not Technology or Religion instead its individuals wills. However its interesting to see how many people will throw all the worlds problems on religion.

Plus, what about the scientific experiments carried out in the Concentration Camps? I'd say bad acts have indeed been done in the name of science.

I think more in the name of "racial purity" ... or something along those lines. And arguably, they did in the name of... maybe not religion but I would say something similar.I wouldn't say religion itself causes harm, but rather some of the beliefs and motives that are associated with it. People can be quite decieving with their religion. Some people will try to achieve their own gain, while hiding behind a facade of faith.
Science, on the other hand, isn't really capable of harm.Understanding the world we live in doesn't harm anyone :)
