Well, why can't it be infinite?

I've seen a lot of approaches to this question, and I'm more lost than ever on which I agree with (not that I'm informed enough to begin to have an opinion on which is right). I've heard things like the universe is flat or something, and kind of infinite, or that it loops back on top of itself and is infinite, and tons of other things....

I would say that if our universe is "inside" of something, that something is infinite, because the universe will expand forever into it (until matter is spread so thin it would seem there is no universe).

But lately I've been reading that Hawking truly believes there are tons of universes.

Space by definition is not a physical object but simply the lack of any physical properties. The same way that black isnt a color but the abscence of any color.

Given that, i think its safe to say that space could plausibly be infinite. And probably is.

I say that there is no end.
I think that if we were to go as far as possible into space, we'd eventually just reach another universe, whether or not there will be life in that universe, I cannot say.
Unfortunately, its too big of a risk to any space agency to create a space shuttle which could travel that far and make its way back not even knowing if it actually would come back. It would basically be a suicide mission for all of the astronauts aboard.

like if u were to theoretically draw a straight line from the center of earth to the furthest part of space, then past that, then past that, then past that and so on...

So you are saying that space is circular? Thats actually an entirely plausible deduction. Think of earth as a molecul of water floating inside a round balloon full of water. Something like that.

Joe Rogan the comic anyone? I love when he goes on about this stuff in his standup.

I've always wondered about space. Quantum Psychics discusses this in theory, pretty damn mind blowing just thinking about it. I've heard some say that if you were to start in one direction and keep going in a straight line, you would eventually end back up where you started, but wer're not able to comprehend it. Our brains think in linear and 3 dimensional, and somehow this theory goes way beyond. Not sure how they worked that idea out, but it was rather fascinating(Documentary on Showtime/HBO I believe.

Right now, Astronomers are still trying to figure out what black holes are all about and black matter, which is pretty freaky stuff.

It sure is big (example: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Nroo-i8t8vg ). It could be 10,000 centillionlightyears big, it could be infinite or it could be looped around itself (then again, what is beyond that again?). A riddle I doubt we will ever find out.

There is no end to space because for there to be a limit to the movement of matter there must be other matter, thus other space.

all we can see with the most powerful telescopes are things called Quesars, red orbs that are blurry since they are so far away that constantly move further away from us telling us that the universe is still expanding

You can't reach the 'end of space' because the space between here and the 'edge' is expanding faster than the speed of light, which is the theoretical speed limit.

actually space was once thought to be flat, but that was somehow incompatible with quantum mechanics. so now, we are pretty sure that it is curved, shaped sort of like a saddle

At the edges of the universe there are large deposits of anti-matter which when combined with matter it releases 100% pure energy with no left overs. An atomic bomb releases something like 0.7% of energy. Therefore when the big bang stops and starts going backwards, the anti-matter will combine with all matter in its path.

(lol what a pile of nonsense)
