This next semester for some odd reason, one of my classes is 'Logic' (high school) On top of not even signing up for this class, I don't even know what the hell you're supposed to do. Especially for a whole semester. Do we talk about how to think, or what?

Well it wouldn't be computer logic, so it's the study of logic and reasoning in philosophy. You'll be reading about Socrates and Plato and learning to use logic to determine if something is true or false, or if a statement is of sound reasoning, to breakdown a philosophic arguement into components, ect.

It's fun just requires a lot of thought.

Damn, i'm definitely not looking forward to this =/

Whats better is that I go to a catholic school, and the teacher is a super-catholic and will probably water down a LOT and modify it to fit our religion. Well, their religion.. I'm atheist

When I took it we looked at the structure of arguments to determine if they were valid and studied various fallacies.

Yeah, we definitely spent too much time on some stuff for my tastes.

It won't have anything to do with Socrates or Plato. It will most likely be symbolic logic in the form of proofs, syllogisms, etc. You'll learn about the relationships between premises and conclusions that cause arguments to be valid or invalid, and about tautologies and contradictions. You might also study different types of rhetoric, and how they can reinforce those arguments.

I had a couple of classes on logic during my classes (comp sci major here). Just the name "logic" doesn't really help narrow it down. One was studying various logical systems, such as modal logic and predicate logic, by which logical arguments may be modeled and examined. One was studying logic itself on a meta-level, dealing more with the examination of proving things about logical systems themselves. I imagine that your class would likely be closer to the former than the latter (the latter was called "theoretical logic"), but I can't say for certain. I enjoyed both classes, although I must confess that I enjoyed the second one much less than the first one.

EDIT: Sorry, I somehow missed that you were in high school, not college. In that case, I imagine that your class will very likely be the first of the two options. Or, as others have suggested, it might be studying logic as a general topic on a wider and less deep scale. Can't say for sure, obviously.

I actually liked logic. You sort of learn how to analyse arguments like "All philosophers have beards. I don't have a beard, so I can't be a philosopher." (I know, terrible example), how to work out all of the possible outcomes from that, how to write that in diagrams, symbols, computer programming languages, maths, determining whether things are true (and how true they can be), and so on.

Okay, I just made it sound really dull, but if you've got a good teacher it can be very interesting, or maybe even fun.
