Quite frankly you can get addicted tojust aboutanything. I knew a guy who was addicted to the competition of sports. Not so much sports themselves, but the competition. Luckly he grew up to be a coach so it became a healthy thing.
Speaking from a purely chemical viewpoint, isn't that a large part of what makes up addiction: the release of dopamine and other "feel good" chemicals in the brain? If that's the case, how can an arguement be made that it's all psychological and any different from alocoholism and other forms of addiction?
[QUOTE="EMOEVOLUTION"][QUOTE="Omni-Slash"]most addiction is just a lack of freakin willpower and a crutch to cry about....Omni-Slasha common prejudice against people with mental illness.Mental illness is one thing....but people throw the term of addiction around way too easily...are there real cases?....sure....but 9/10...it's a lack of will power....call me prejudice all you want....I'll happily accept your flame...
I'm with Omni-Slash. There is this culture in the west where no one wants to take responsibility for anything they do. To take a quote from Law & Order ( I think it was)
"Back in my days, a man kills a woman, we called it murder. Nowadays, you can probably blame it on some disorder or something."
One can have an addiction with anything, sex included. Having an addiction does not excuse any actions that might be taken by an individual, it just may mean that an individual might use this addiction for the purpose of finding some type of fulfillment.
We all have our addictions or things we worship that we use to fill some type of void. An individual might obsess over video games to take himself out of a harsh reality in the real world. Another individual might obsess over relationships, expecting a certain relationship or relationships to fulfill a need. Yet another individual might be a workaholic and always be thinking true contentment is only a promotion away. Of these things we seek after, rarely do they completely satisfy for an extended period of time. Personally, I hold that Christ alone fills that gap. :P

Do you have Christ addiction? ...possibly. I intentionally seek to make it worse with each passing day. :o[QUOTE="mindstorm"]

I understand mental illness and I totally get that REAL mental illness is crippling, but I think in the case of addictions, most of the time people just do not want to accept responsiblity, so they say that they have a problem, that they have an addiction, that it has taken them over completely, because that's a lot easier than just saying, "hey, I like [insert item here: sex/drugs/food/shopping] too much" and fixing the problem on their own.
