I liked Death Note but I stopped after the second season, N was such a dumb character...  I would rcommend Cowboy Bebop though, it's so good.

No anime series.

Anyone who says Michael Bay sucks must agree that anime sucks because they both use the exact same techiniques for attention of the audience. This is a fact, no trolling at all.

I'm not big into anime, but Death Note was PHENOMENAL.

I started watching full metal alchemist.  So far, it's pretty good, and I hear it only gets better.

i feel you on the death note. great in s1 but sorta fail part once the main fight was over. You should check out code Geass, as quite bit in common with death note but much better IMO

I honestly can't decide on just one that is the best. But if you want recommendations, then I'll say

  • Monster
  • Mushishi
  • Ghost in the Shell
  • Ranma 1/2
  • Michiko to Hatchin
  • Code Geass
  • Ergo Proxy
  • Speed Grapher
  • Black Lagoon
  • Fate/Zero
  • Shin Sekai Yori

I'd put them all above Death Note. But that's just my personal opinion.

Macross, Slayers, Record of Lodoss War, Trigun, and Outlaw Star come to mind. But if I have to pick only one I would say Macross (and now I feel old.)

I watched like 5 minutes of Monster. Turned it off because it was so boring in animation form. I can't see any benefits of watching it instead of reading it. I understand action and comedy shows, but the vast majority of Monster was talking.

I'd probably go with Cowboy Bebop as the best of all time. Death Note and Code Geass are really good, but I felt the second season of each was a wash (except for the ending of Code Geass). FMA Brotherhood was pretty fun throughout.

I'm surprised at all the mentions of DBZ. I mean sure, I used to think the same. But that was back when I was a kid with low expectations and knowledge of what makes a really good show. That and I had never seen any other anime aside from Sailor Moon and Pokemon. But viewing DBZ as an adult with my nostalgia visors taken off, that show was awful.

Hush your mouth! DBZ is timeless!

I won't deny its influence. Its one of the first of the "long drawn out shonen anime." It paved the way for shows like Naruto, One Piece, and Bleach. And I'd honestly take DBZ over those 3 shows anyday. But its still cheesy, over the top, full of fillers and a even a few plot holes. The plot and characters aren't all that deep either; in fact they're very simplistic. I just think that there are many works in the medium that are far greater than DBZ.
