And what score do you give it?

Since I liked the musical Wicked (I loved the beautiful music and the fantastic sets, but the story itself was kinda so so), I decided to give the novel that inspired it a read. It's called Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Macguire.

It was one of the best "fantasy" books I've ever read because it's not really a fairy tale. It's more of a political, philosophical, religious tale and it has tons of very adult themes. Whereas the musical was family oriented, the book is not for young children.

There were points where the prose was not very clearly written, but overall, the writing was elegant, poetic, and original, the themes were intelligent, the plot progression was subtle and graceful, and Elphaba as a character was unforgettable.

I give it a 4.75/5.

So what was the last book you finished?

Curious as to peoples opinions on The Hunger Games series. I wouldn't mind an addictive read but I'm afraid it's going to be to Twilight-esque with the romance. As for my last book it is an Australian classic called cloustreet, right now I'm reading through Mass Effect: Revelations, the first book in the novel series.

Well the last book I finished was a while ago, and it was The Grapes of Wrath. Very moving and "epic" story. The ending was a little odd but overall I really, really liked it. Now, I'm starting The Sun Also Rises. First Hemingway for me.

I do, but I just don't do it. I don't read much because I never read much as a kid. Even though my mom tried to force me to read. So I never really developed a reading habit. I even groan when I have to read my text book for classes. In order for me to get back into the reading game, I'm going to need someone to give me a really good book.

Just do it, robot. Seriously, I didn't read from like fifth grade until well after I graduated high school, I kinda hated the idea. I don't think my reading skills, especially my speed, are ever going to be what they could've been, but I can honestly say I enjoy reading much more than watching 99% of the TV shows on the air. I used to watch reruns of whatever was on whether I liked it or not, thinking about how good some of the books I've read since and how bad some of those shows were makes me cringe. It'll probably always be a chore, I always feel like doing something else whenever I decide to read, but after I start reading you have to drag me away from it.

The Silmarillion by J.R.R Tolkien. It's a very good book if your into Tolkien lore, although often times very difficult to read. Still really good though, and necessary for fully enjoying the Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

Just keep in mind that the book is almost a completely different story. It has alot of the same elements and characters, but the story is just so much different. The book is alot sadder IMO.

It was either Ender's Game or 1984, shortly before school started... Ender's Game was a 4.5/5, 1984 was a 3.5/5.

The last book I read was The Last Wish, which is one of the books the game The Witcher is based on. It was a pretty good book, it was divided into short stories, all of which I enjoyed. I would give it an 8 out of 10.

The Jesus Paradigm by David Alan Black. The book very much confronts very popular beliefs within American Christianity regarding how one practices Christianity and puts forth what might be a more biblical approach. Dr. Black confronts such things as the typical views of the pastor, the strange fascination with the putting forth a "Christian" agenda within government, living a comfortable life that does nothing to love neighbor and the world, etc. While I am not certain I agree with every point made within the text, much of what he has to say is very much needed within Western Christianity.

After waiting several years for the damn thing to finally get written, A Dance With Dragons by George R. R. Martin. The previous book, A Feast for Crows, was disappointedly average so I wasn't hyping this book too much and I'm glad I didn't. It was bad, definitely the worst in what used to be an excellent Fantasy series. The worst part is how damn long it was. Over 1,000 pages and I could probably summarize all the major plot developments in five sentences. Rambling like you wouldn't believe...

If I were to rate it, I'd probably give it a 4/10, with the first three books scoring 9/10 (10/10 for the third book) and a 5/10 for the fourth book.

Besides my Bible and the occasionalcomic books, War & Peace. Very difficult to get into, but also very, very intresting. Its about Napoleon's invasions of Russia, the battles, the politics, the mood of the time as the back drop. Insert loyalties, tactics of battle, religion and philosophy, romantic relationships and friendshipsand its one crazily deep book. Took me 5 days to finish it; I ought to re-read it. 4/5

'Sit Down and Shut Up' by Brad Warner. I dug it, though not quite as much as his first book, 'Hardcore Zen'. Good book, but I wouldn't recommend it for anyone unfamiliar with Zen Buddhism (or with Brad Warner for that matter).

I usually NEVER read books, but lately I've been addicted to Starcraft Ghost: Nova... She used to be my most liked character in SC universe, now she's hands down my top favorite character ever in SC. I bought the 3 Graphic novels and pre-ordered SC Ghost: Spectres (which is essentially the novelization of SC: Ghost the now definitely cancelled game) ... Can't wait :D

EDIT: I just realized that the most recent book I've read is the one I'm reading: Notes from a small Island by the literary genius Bill Bryson

Wow, is it that bad? The last book I finished was A Feast for Crows which I would give a 7/10. I won't be getting A Dance With Dragons until it's out on paperback but I'm surprised by all the negative feedback it's getting.

The last book I finished was "Fahrenheit 451." It was probably the 4th or 5th time I've read it, and it's still a very enjoyable and thought-provoking read. * * * 1/2 stars (out of 4). I'm almost finished with "A Clash Of Kings" (book 2 of "A Song Of Ice And Fire"). Now I remember why I didn't rush right out to get books 3 and 4. * * stars.

"Often times" difficult? Try "all the time." As much as I love Tolkien's work, "Silmarillion" is the most brutal to read... it's as dry as a history textbook, even if the stories are interesting.

I wouldn't really say it's necessary to read it to fully enjoy 'the Hobbit' and 'the Lord of the Rings'. Especially considering its publication 40 and 23 years after those books.

"Inferno" by Dante (Durante) Alighieri. Part of "La Divina Commedia." This was my fifth attempt at the book and I finally was able to surmount it (had mostly to do with reading only this, and doing so in shorter periods). It was a little less interesting than I thought it was going to be (probably due to the lack of a "musical" tone of the verse in English rather than the original Italian) and spent a lot of time going on and on about politicians during Dante's time. It could be seen as a religious text... but I think it is more a political commentary than anything else. And it is most definitely a fictional, artistic creation. Now I have "Purgatorio" to look forward to next.

The Measure of the Magic, book 2 in the Legends of Shannara books by Terry Brooks...10/10...really good, couldn't put it down...obviously I'd suggest reading book one first (Bearers of the Black Staff) :P....but not before you read the Genesis of Shannara trilogy either...read that trilogy first then these two...or even better start with The Word and Void trilogy, then the Genesis trilogy...then these two...lmao (I could go on...)

[QUOTE="ferrari2001"]The Silmarillion by J.R.R Tolkien. It's a very good book if your into Tolkien lore, although often times very difficult to read. Still really good though, and necessary for fully enjoying the Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. SilentFireX
I've only met one other person who's read The Simarillion. Lol, it's basically a history book for Lord of The Rings. As I used to read history books for fun, I wound up reading it after I finished the rest of the LOTR books.

Ooh I've read it! It took a while, but it was really good!

A Storm of Swords

Great third book to A Song of Ice and Fire series although I still enjoyed A Clash of Kings a bit more. I'm already 300 pages into Book 4: A Feast For Crows and I can already say it's not anywhere as good as the previous books, but hopefully it picks up.

I finished reading The Pale King, by David Foster Wallace last week. Taking into account its unfinished nature, I give it a 4/5. There are some truly great chapters mixed in with some rough and dumbfounding ones. It had plenty of potential in being as good as his previous novel, if he lived long enough to finish it. Now I'm 28 chapters into Moby Dick.
