The spear? The sword? Bow and arrow? Rifle? Gatling gun? Hydrogen bomb? Cruise missile?

According to this self-described "mad professor" (VIDEO), it's the atlatl---or dart thrower.

He argues that it's the weapon that put humanity at the top of the food chain and, as such, the most influential weapon developed!

My vote goes to man. These weapons can't be effective unless there is somebody behind it. We have to power to further our civilization in the future, or destroy it-- and there's one weapon that can do that, ourselves.

The machine gun. It radically changed how battles were fought. For centuries it was common to have a large group of men charge out on the battlefield. But when this tactic met the aforementioned hardware during the early days of World War One the result was nothing short of a blood bath.

Nuclear weapons have most likely prevented several conflicts. So, probably those. Either that or the board with a nail in it.

Easily nuclear weapons. Other weapons may have changed how warefare was conducted, but nuclear weapons actually ended war (to an extent). Before nukes were invented even the most powerful nations were liable to go to war with each other, often without too much in the way of political negotiation. Then with the advent of nuclear weapons that suddenly stopped because it became impossible to truly win a war against a nuclear adversary. Even if you did manage to conquer them it was very likely your homeland would be reduced to irradiated glass anyway. If you look at the past half century you'll notice that no nuclear country has ever gone to war with another nuclear country, even if their relationships were so tense that in any other era you would have had a war. Perfect examples would be India vs. Pakistan and USA vs USSR.

If you're looking at it as a turning point in which humanity became the dominant species in spite of being slower and weaker than most other large predators, he couldn't be more right.

The principle of easy to use, deadly and minimal training weapons - such as guns, crossbows etc - which subsequently led to the destruction of warrior classes/castes.

The longbow gets an honerable mention, as it adheres to a similar idea of peasantry being able to easily dispatch Armoured Noblemen and knights (the longbow required a lifetime of mastery to be used effectively, and was only wielded in military use when it was a popular weapon/pastime among the lower classes)

Actually swords were still in common use. You see the trouble with muskets is they take time to reload. It wasn't until the advent of quick loading cartridge rounds that swords were made completely obsolete.

Even then the AK-47 is a largely unimportant weapon in the history of warfare. Things like nuclear weapons, ICBMs, bombing aircraft, computer guided missiles, and the first machine gun were far more influential. Nukes essentially ended war between military powers. ICBMs made it so that you didn't even need to have your military leave your country to decimate your enemy. Bombing aircraft allowed you to attack an enemy without necessarily needing to move an army close to them and it ushered in air warfare. Missiles resulted in virtually all naval and air combat occurring between opponents who can't even see each other. And the machine gun essentially let one solider take the place of an entire army.

The cannon and artilary in general are pretty influential. They were highly influential in the development of mathematics and then computers also they lead to the removal of thick armor and castles.

I can think of one, the Renault FT-17 tank. Every tank built to this day still follows this design (with a rotating turret on top and engine in the back.)
