Looks like there hasn't been a discussion on this since 2009. Time to get an updated opinion! :D So what is the absolute worst, filthiest, most run-down city(ies) you've been to? It could also be a small town or similar.

I don't get out very often, but I'd say the worst city I've been to is Birmingham, AL.

only two come to mind...

Gary, Indiana

and

some town in Mississippii that i ended up having to stay in but the name escapes me. The town was along a hil and near the top was a paper mill, so the town smelled like utter waste. it was pretty damn bad.

I was born near Baltimore, and have been in downtown several times. The harbor area is pretty cool, and there are other things to do, but the crime is pretty bad so watch your toes. Some parts are pretty nasty, others not so bad.

we were somewhere between Los Angeles and Las Vegas and we stopped for gas but the town looked dead, there were people at the gas station but we went in, they didn't actually sell anything there but people were setting up chairs around the store to face the TV by the counter, and the guy behind the counter looked at everyone and said "okay, what do you want to watch, [held up two VHS tapes in each hand] Under Siege or Out for Justice?"

If it's anything like most big cities in the US (which I'm guessing it is) then it has its areas that are really crappy but it also has areas that are fine. Just make sure you research it beforehand.

Copenhagen. I hate Copenhagen. It's so big and cluttered, and people are so rude. Mind you, I've been in Edinburgh and Berlin, and those two cities are much bigger - both people and size wise, but it's much easier to find your way around there and people are so much nicer and helpful.

Rome was honestly the stinkiest, dirtiest, most annoying place I've ever been to. Rude smelly people that smoke everywhere, teeny tiny *meep meep* scooters that will literally bump into your car and not stop, crappy traffic and public transportation, tons of pickpockets and agressive homeless, the men will hit on your 14 year old daughter if she is cute...the list goes on

Plenty of places to go in Italy, only reason to go to Rome is to see the coliseum...and even that was underwhelming.

As far as other cities i thought were terrible?

Riyadh and Taif in Saudi. Riyadh is way way too big, and in both towns the people are generally jerks (got some chip on their shoulders it seems), and/or their back*** word thinking.

DC... People expect the capitol to be nice... But let me tell you, the national mall and the monuments are nice (when there isn't construction on/around it lol)... But outside of those areas it is Assville, USA.

I would have to agree with this. I went not long ago for a sporting event and was amazed at how little the city had to offer. I would also have to say I wasn't fond of Atlanta, GA lol :P

As a person who lives in 10 miles from Edinburgh i still get lost when i go up there for a night out :( the grassmarket can get confusing, mind you i spend bout 10x more time in Glasgow as its where my friends went to uni and i went for a year of college but its a better lay out in terms of street its a bit like Barca with the grid Pattern :P Only places i know in Edinburgh is how to get to Studio 24,The Hive and a couple other places from the train station :(

Worst city i've been in is probably Dundee never go there much sure people are nice but by god its an absolute dive :( Cumbernauld's a shout aswell even tho its a town its a worthy mention due to the fact its one of THE offensive looking places from a design aspect trust me xD.

Ol' Reekle was rather easy to navigate for me, as a tourist. I'd like to go there again and try and get a different perspective of the city, because tourists always see the main parts of the city, and not the side roads and small pubs etc. unless you go walkabout alone.

Reno, NV. It's like a really bad imitation of Las Vegas. The only thing worth seeing is Lake Tahoe. The city itself felt like some small country town with a Circus Circus tossed in the middle of it.

Paris, France: Snob Capital of the World. Snobs immigrate from other parts of the world with hopes to live there and participate in the snobbery. It's all very snobby. The Louvre is wonderful though.

I figure it was because I've only ever spent lots of time in the streets of CPH, with all the people and the rush hour and the stress. When I was in Christiania, it was the first time I met real, genuinely nice folk.
