Today would easily be my pick for one of, if not the worst place I've ever eaten. I live in NY so there's tons of delis, diners, and hole in the wall type restaraunts. I picked this random place today out in Queens and man, was it awful. Still bummed I spent money on a sandwhich that was so bad. I think I realize now why there was nobody else eating there. If only I'd realized it sooner

A McDonalds. Not all McDonalds places are terrible, mind you - the food isn't great, but you know what you're getting, and it's consistently mediocre half-plastic fare. There was one in Golden, along the highway, that was terrible. I ordered a Big Mac and fries - how do you screw that up? Well, the fries were incredibly soggy, the burger had more lettuce around it than in it, there was more sauce than burgers and the bun on the bottom had been torn in half but slapped in there anyway. It also looked like someone sat on it (though McDonalds burgers generally always look like that, so I won't hold it against it). The worst part was that I couldn't even get back in there to get a refund because it was so goddamn packed with travelers and I had to get back on the highway immediately.

Long John Silvers. I ate there and the food was done in like one minute. So I was eating it and it was still cold. Found out it was sitting out and they just microwaved it. Haven't been there since.

An IHOP, around 15 years ago. No more IHOP for Palantas since.

Any and all varieties? I thought chow halls were in general pretty good. Sometimes field chow was a horrendous mess, but often they came up with decent stuff. And MREs improved dramatically from 2002 to 2005, in my opinion.

I used to put spam boxes near the transmission of the tank and eat it when we stopped. Best thing ever. The only reason I don't eat spam anymore- is the embarrassment involved in buying it, you know, civilianly[?].

I met a group of marines with stories about combat rations involving burger patties that self heated when in contact with water. Are those any good?

I've not heard of those. The closest thing I recall to that is an Iraqi kid eating the contents of an MRE heater like it was a bag of Pop Rocks or something. That did not turn out well for him, so I can't imagine the burger patties are much better.

Airports. Unless it's a chain restaurant, I stay far away. In both vancouver and LAX I had horrible meals and so did the other family members who ate there and ate at places that weren't chains.

That's not a bad thing. A properly cooked burger/steak should still be bloody in the center.

On a large chain level I believe P.F. Chang's wins that particular honor from me. Just awful, awful bland food (and I love bland Americanized foodstuffs) that was devoid of almost all taste. Nasty little place it was. Man that talk of Spam has me hungry now though and I do have a can in the cupboard...

A highly prematurely opened Shogun a few years ago. It was probably the 2nd or 3rd night it was opened and while I was there; 2 cooks quit, it took probably 1 half of the other customers left, an outer wall fell in, it took 1 1/2 hours to get food which ended up being already made food that was for customers who got up and left.

We have a saying around here... The first thing you do when you bring KFC home, is put it in the oven to finish.

Arby's. If their sandwiches qualify as "Roast Beef", then grilled cheese should qualify as fine cuisine.

Some resturant called Danny's (not Denny's). First time I went, I ordered the chicken plate. It tasted so bland, and they charged me like $13 for that plate. The bread was the only thing that tasted good; everything else felt like it was microwaved or something. A week later after that, I went to Danny's again for my grandma's b-day and asked for the fajita plate this time, and it also tasted bland. Wow. I mean, how can you screw up fajita?

Almost every steakhouse in washington, what their definition is of bbq and good tasting meat differs from what they call southern bbq. It tastes like something you'd get served at mcdonalds.
