The development of an economically feasible, functional nuclear fusion reactor.

This would really be the benchmark for humanity to enter a new era - all the great things you people talk about (solutions for world hunger, water shortage, global warming), they all begin at that point.

Although I predict this new era will being with a nice, cosy World War as the result of the rapid reshaping of the world economy - so yeah, it's gonna be an interesting time to live in, if any of us ever gets to see it...

You're entitled to your beliefs. I believe that in the beginning humans weren't so screwed-up. The rapture is a highly-debated subject that doesn't necessarily have much to do with the Bible. Depends on what Christian denomination you put stock in. A few other religions believe in something along the same lines, but once again, there's a huge division on this issue of the rapture.
