What makes you a geek/nerd?

I know a kid at school who has a custom PC that he prides himself with, he plays lots of Counter Strike and Team Fortress 2 but he always says that he isn't a geek or a nerd because he has a "social life". He doesn't have many friends, in fact I am one of the only people who will actually site to listen to his monologs but he continues to tell me he has a real social life, what makes you a geek or a nerd?

A geek is someone who is intelligent but focuses more on the things that most people take no interest in, Star Trek, video games with complicated plots, many hardcore gamers are geeks in my definition. Some have social lives while others don't but most geeks have skills that don't benifit society.

Nerds are people who are very intelligent but take little interest in things that don't ultimately matter to society, they don't play many video games and they enjoy very intellectual movies, they read a lot and have skills that will benifit society and will get them far in life, for example, you are a nerd if you enjoy robotics and don't take interest in video games. A nerd is also very focused on grades in school but is very confident that they will get grades higher than everyone else, nerds have social lives but are almost always friends with tightly nit groups of other nerds.

No, I am not that kid but I do have a tendency to listen to my own monologs.

Well. Is it the fact that I have boxes of Green Lantern comic books right next to me? Or is it because on a Saturday afternoon I reorganized my pokemon cards? And it doesn't hurt that I am somewhat intelligent :P.

Well I have a fairly good social life but I do have an unhealthy obsession with Star Wars. :P I'm pretty geeky I suppose but its not a bad thing.xTheExploited

How unhealthy, Star Wars is appriciated by non geeks/nerds too so I usually associate geeks/nerds with Star Trek, I love a good episode of Star Trek.

Lol I thought it was the other way around. I guess I'm a geek after all.

I study science. AndI don't have much of a social life because a lot of the social events don't stimulate me or arn't constructive enough for my taste.

Nerds are a bit more social than geeks, I think it has something to do with the fact that geeks seem to care about romantic relationships more than nerds, nerds really don't care from what I have seen but geeks like girls but are too afraid to talk to them because they aren't social enough.

Hmm I consider myself a bit of a geek. :P I do play videogames very ofetn and for long periods of time (although lately I haven't been playing much) andI tend to sometimes watch Star Trek.

Playing VGs doesn't make you a nerd... I mean, I'm a nerd and I just lost my virginity yesterday while I was drunk (I'm 16 by the way).

So it's weird... I like videogames, I'm interested in cinema, and I'm a good student. There's no need to label people with "NERD". It's easier to say somebody does/likes nerdy things.

For someone to be a complete and utter nerd, they'd have to call themselves ANIMEGAMER, watch Naruto while they play WoW all day, despise sports and not talk to anyone... Especially girls.

And that must be pretty rare.

All I do is play video games, if I'm not playing video games I am researching video games or talking about video games, I played my first video game when I was three on a Sega Genisis, maybe I am a geek. About that kid, I think he is a nerd.
