Slayer have 2 albums worth listening to: their debut EP Show No Mercy and Reign in Blood. That is it. The most over-rated band in extreme music. I will give them credit for those 2 albums, as they were some of the best and most infuential Thrash albums of all time. But after Regin they went to crap.

Hell Awaits, South of Heaven and Seasons in the abyss are all classic metal albums. They went downhill after Seasons in the abyss was released I think.Pig Destroyer, Nasum, Eyehategod, Today is the Day, Converge, Isis, Cobalt, Slayer, Metallica (80s stuff only), Iron Monkey, Acid Bath, Entombed, Death, Nile, Pantera etc.

[QUOTE="konvikt_17"]Tool aren't close to metal, they are metal. My second favorite Progressive metal band.closest i get to metal, is Tool. which is in my top 5.
not to say i just blindly dont listen to metal.
ive listened to various different bands, in the metal genre. they just arent for me.
Doct0rBiohazard
yea. ive had several "music elitists" tell they are not metal. meh couldnt care less about their genre, i like thier music:D
i just said that to avoid people coming in and saying "Tool isnt metal dude". not thats its that big a deal, i just dont feel like arguing/clarifying and trying to go through all the sun-genres of metal to find out what i already knew.

I'd like to mention 1349. Great black metal band, with an amazing drummer. Kjetil-Vidar Haralstad (aka Frost) is a drumming beast. I_Liek_Rawkz
All time favortie BM band right there. Hellfire is a masterpiece

I love 1349, but in terms of Black Metal I prefer Bilskirnir or Carpathian Forest[QUOTE="imaps3fanboy"][QUOTE="Doct0rBiohazard"]So much noisy crap...Doct0rBiohazardHow so?I've been looking at some of the bands posted. Most of them are in the Extreme Metal genre. Now since I try not to be closed minded I'm not going to say the genre as a whole is crap. How can I explain... Think about it, what can you do with Death Metal? You can't really do much with it except make it softer (Melodeath), or heavier (Brutal Death Metal). So very many bands form every week trying to make Brutal Death Metal. So we've got this infinite amount of Death Metal bands running around the music scene. All sounding the same, all singing about the same thing and all portraying the same image. I've seen all these people post bands with death metal type names. Mixed in with the few actually respectable Death Metal bands. "So much noisy crap". See what I mean?
Ah yes, the old "death trap"
A lot of new death metal bands do tend to go for full on aggression, forgetting to add any versatility to their music. But to be honest, I'm usually not fussy when it somes to the heavier side of metal. I can enjoy the mindless noise :P

Testament
Machine Head
Metallica
Megadeth
Slayer
Sepultura (The Max years only)
Soulfly
Anthrax
Pantera
Fear Factory
Those are the metal bands I primarily listen to. I've been trying ot branch out into some other stuff, but I always go back to these guys.
I love melodic/thrash/groove metal.
Can't really get into Death Metal because I don't like growling/banshee/wailing vocals. They annoy me.

Death Metal really is an acquired taste, I for one love it, but and as for the vocals, if you've listened to enough fo the stuff you find it really easy to understand, even stuff you haven't heard before, or maybe that's just me.Death Metal really is an acquired taste, I for one love it, but and as for the vocals, if you've listened to enough fo the stuff you find it really easy to understand, even stuff you haven't heard before, or maybe that's just me.samremnant
My biggest gripe with death metal is not so much the vocals, the lack of creativity of a lot of bands. I used to be into Cannibal Corpse (as a kid pretty much) and similar bands, until I realised they all sounded the same. The often cheesey lyrical themes also put me off. It seems that in most cases it's either about gore or pseudo-intellectual political crap (I'm looking at you, Napalm Death). Of course this doesn't apply to every band out there, but whenever someone recommends me a death metal band, it ends in disappointment.
I must say, though, that Darkthrone's Soulside Journey album is a very good death metal record.
