For those people saying "top 50 school; prestigious school", who cares? You act like you're hot stuff just because you happen to go to a school that's high ranked on some list.

fiscope

Going to a prestigious school isn't something you do for yourself. You do it to please your future employers, who associate these schools with good things. No one is bragging, but you can't blame someone for being proud of attending.

You can't say nobody is bragging. Not everyone is, but there are definetly some people who put like "one of the top 50 schools," when there was no apparent reason to, other than to try and showoff to other people.

I agree (I'm not saying shoryuken is doing it), but I hate when people post rankings or whatever else in order to put down others. Be proud wherever you go, but no reason to showboat.

SilentSoprano

Nobody was bragging though. Merely saying, "My school is in the top 50" does not mean your are showboating. For some reason, saying something like that hurts soprano's ego.

How is it not showboating? The topic didn't ask "what rank is your school," it just asked what college you go to. All you had to do was say the name of your college, but people like you feel there is some reason to go further. What reason is there for even saying my school is in the top 50 other than trying to show off?

Pretty much. I've been surrounded by this sort of talk my whole life, and I find it to be very shallow. I've gone through both extremes personally, and I see it as a pathetic attempt to boost one's ego.

I didn't say anything about my school being in top anything, although it is 8th in the world for engineering! :D Lighten up. It's not bragging, it's pride. The same way that people boast about their favorite teams. Also, TC asked why we picked the schools we did. Perceived school quality is an obvious answer!

Again, why does it damage your ego so much? It's fine for people to be proud of going to a good school because you have to work very hard to get in AND stay in until you graduate.

Me too. You should have seen my high school. It was mostly Asian people (no offense to anyone here), and all you ever heard at that school was "What college are you going to?" or people making fun of someone because they weren't going to Brown or a UC or Pepperdine or something. I say it was mostly Asian people because they are known to be more hardcore when it comes to education, at least where I live.

St. Clair College, for what I believe is one of only a few convergence journalism programs in the province.

People wear branded clothes, drive BMWs and wear jewelry for the same reason usually. The only difference is that universities are relatively unknown except for Harvard and Yale. It's human nature (or rather a specific type of shallow human culture).

It doesn't damage my ego man, it just pisses me off because I saw so much showboating/bragging about college when I went to high school that I can't stand to see people do it now. I agree, it's fine to be proud, but there's a difference between being proud and just plain bragging. Saying "my school is in the top 50" just seems like straight bragging to me, especially since you don't even say the name of your school. If you were proud, wouldn't you say the name of your school?

@SilentSoprano: I didn't give the name of my school simply because I don't want to give away too much info on the internet. That was also the case with several other people in this thread.

Yea, I understand that. I don't want to argue over the internet anymore because it's just stupid.

Tennessee or Texas?

It was Georgia Tech for me, in the mid 90's.

North Dakota State University. Woohoo. I only applied to two schools: NDSU and Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA. I got in to both, but decided to just stay in town and go to NDSU. I'd rather be in Philly right now, but it made a lot more sense to just stay here for now. I'm pursuing a BS in Computer Science.
