What about you start messuring your BMI and muscle girth?

zeldaluff

Sorry, but muscle does not weigh more than fat. 1 pound = 1 pound. Muscle does take up less space than fat though.

If 1 pound = 1 pound, but takes up less space, wouldn't it weigh more? :?

Yes and no. It's kind of hard to explain but think about this. Lets say you have 1,000 pounds of lead and 1,000 pounds of feathers. The feathers would take up a way larger amount of space. Does that help any?

I'm 5'11'' and 160.

I used to be 200 and only about 5'9'' last year around easter time, then I decided to start eating better, but NOT less, deffenately not less, like an above poster said that messes up your metabolism.

What I did is cut out all soda, chips, and unhealthy foods, and ate a bunch of small low calorie meals, about 5-6 a day. I also started doing H.I.I.T.(high intensity interval training) and, it sounds rediculous, but I started playing ddr out of boredom I believe that helped alot too.

So yeah don't starve yourself, and there is no way that you are 180 and 5'6" and most of that is muscle, no offense.

Best way to weight yourself is in the morning, right after you get up. Make sure you have gone to the bathroom, so theres no water in your system.

An electronic scale is accurate to a +/- 2 pound difference

Yeah but he's a body builder and he's probably confortable with his body and wouldn't be posting this thread.

Oh wow. This thread reaks of incorrect facts. First off DO NOT skip meals. And 3 meals a day is not good if you wish to lose weight. 5-6 smaller meals a day keeps your metabolism going and you will burn more calories. Snacking can be a good thing, given your snacking on the right things.

Another thing, jogging more than 20 minutes is a waste of time? I am really not sure where you heard this from but if I jog at a light pace for about 20 mins I am just getting warmed up... Definitely not a waste of time.

Also you should definitely weigh yourself in the morning, reason being if you weigh yourself every morning your conditions will be the same. If you stick to the same eating routine, then you will of course see the weight loss if there is any.

And yes of course you can gain muscle and lose weight at the same time? What the? Lifting weights actually increase your metabolism rate, meaning you will burn fat if you are consistent with it. There are a lot of bodybuilders who bulk and then cut, but there doing it for completely different reasons. You can definitely gain muscle while losing weight.

Also you probably do not go to a school as fortunate as mine (making an assumption) where we have a salad bar and we can make sandwiches with whatever we wish, and our school has almost all healthy options. If that is so then you should bring your lunch.

This may seem a bit much, but if your wishing to really lose weight and become healthy you should set an ideal calorie intake per day and try to stick to it. You may not know how many calories are in certain foods, if so just google a calorie counter and there are plenty that show you what amount of calories are in certain foods. 2000 calories is usually the daily value on the back of food containers, boxes, etc. But that doesn't mean thats what you should be intaking. I intake probably 3000-3500 calories a day at least. Granted I am 6'6" and take part in a lot of lifting, etc.

Here's a site that you can use the forums there to gain more knowledge from those who can help you more than me : http://www.t-nation.com/

At first glance its a body building and site for serious athletes, but there are plenty of people there who can help you in just staying generally fit. Just find the right forum and do some research and ask questions.

If your not that serious about losing weight and staying fit then sorry for such a long post :p

Drink that for breakfast and some after dinner and the pounds will start to shed. It's a thick protein-shake that will eventually become your meal substitue. And with over 30g of Protein in every scoop, it'll work. Plus it's the only good tasting Protein Shake I can find:lol:

I'm not the picture of fitness (245 lbs.), but at 6'5", and my BMI at about 17% (big boned, lots of muscle, lean fat), I could care less.

Drink water
Eat right
Lift (so the ladies will dig your bod;))
Run

And one more thing; people will tell you to change your diet.

Don't.

Atleast not when you start. I mean, if you just cut out dessert, late-night snack, fast food, etc. It'll help

Just keep at it, don't loose hope and it'll start to fly off; you'll see

Eat healthy, not less. If you want muscle, you need a high protein diet. Edit: As the poster above said, protein powders can really promote muscle growth, only if you actually work out, I had a friend who worked out once a week and always wondered why he didn't gain any muscle. What I do is wake up at 6 and hit the gym, go home take a shower and leave for school. (the 6am part isn't necessary, its just that I dont have any time other than that.)

I was about to edit and post something abour protein. You can drink muscle milk, but its somewhat expensive. A good substitute would be whey protein. Whey protein is better post-workout, because your body is in an anabolic state meaning it is more receptive to protein and your muscles will benefit from it. Muscle milk has some whey in it I believe but it is mostly casein (milk) protein. Milk protein is ideal before you go to bed because it takes the longest to digest.

Honestly I know some people cant afford or dont want to do whey protein post workout and muscle milk before bed but it is ideal. You could always just do whey protein alone.

I would also not use protein as a substitute to a meal. Just use it to supplement your meals.

I take EAS Whey Protein Chocolate flavored (it is delicious tastes kinda like nesquik).

Really? I have EAS (albeit from about 2 years ago, so it may be old nasty flavor [bought it in bulk from Costco]) and it was horrible!

Honestly yes. 2 years? Maybe it was expired... or maybe you accidentally got a soy, whey, casein protein mix on accident? I have done that before, and the mix was a little more chunky and didn't mix as well or taste as good.

If you reall have a problem with taste you should try Optimum 100% whey protein (gold standard is also what it reads on the bottle) it has really good reviews on the internet, and there is a multitude of flavors to try. They may sell some at GNC or you could order it off the internet.

drink as much water as you can stand and only water unless you are working out then a sports drink might be good if you feel like you need it. NEVER skip a meal. Eat a little bit every couple of hours. Do a full set of bodyweight exercises and not just crunchs (push ups, pull ups, free squats, lunges, dips etc.) and make sure that you do them correctly.

Crunches don't do anything except strengthen your muscles only cardio vascular workouts will get rid of fat.

yeh just keep running probably do a bit more and play some sports and stuff. Then you have to make sure you eat healthy and take in less calories than you burn off simple.

Don't skip meals; eat small meals instead. You weight fluctuates wildly during the day if you are an athletic person. I'd pick one or two days a week and weight yourself in the morning before you eat anything just before you get in the shower. Lose the clothes so they don't change your weight.

Skipping meals can make you weigh less for only a very short period of time. After a day or two, your metabolism will slow to a crawl.

Not true. Strength training with cardio added in is more than twice as effective as cardio alone for dropping fat. Your body uses alot of energy rebuilding muscles.

BMI=Bowel movement intensity? I hardly think poo retention could account for that kind of weight.

OMG (thats OH MY GOD) - are you trying to be funny or are you serious?

BMI = Body Mass Index

 that was awesome.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I'll stop skipping lunch and try to find something healthy to eat at school (for lunch)

I do have a question about the 5-6 meal a day thing. Is it like a small breakfast, 3 really light meals during the day (like some fruit/veg and a small amount of some meat) and medium-sized dinner?

Also, to clear up the muscle/fat thing. I didn't say I'm mostly muscle, I said some muscle. I still have plenty of fat  .

Ok, I'm 180 pounds and 5'6 or 5'7 (Some muscle not too much fat) and I can't seem to lose any real weight. My weight will vary from 176.5 to about 180 in a day and I can't seem to go lower. I jog at least every other day and do at least 200 crunches a day (in incriments of a hundred) and I skip lunch on school days. I've been doing this for two weeks and there has been no improvement.

I thought that today was great because when I woke up I weighed 174. I had a small breakfast, some Chinese for lunch (not a lot) and I went jogging for an hour. After jogging I weighed 177.5. What The HELL!?!!?! I don't think I even took in 3 pounds. Does anyone see anything wrong with what I'm doing? Or am I just cursed? Any tips?

Don't eat less food while making the little food you ARE eating horrible for you like chinese food. Eat MORE food, as often as possible up to 6 times a day, but make each meal SMALLER and only eat healthy food. Also, the most effective way to lose weight is a combo of weight training and aerobic workouts. If you can only do one or the other, skip the aerobics. Also, find your BMR (Basic metabolic rate) for each day, multiply by an activity factor, and then subtract however many calories you want from that (Try not to exceed 1% body weight per week, and if you're mostly muscle, don't worry about LOSING weight, just stay the same weight and if you're doing weight training I gurantee you'll be losing fat). Divide that by the number of meals you eat in a day, and try to make each meal that size.

Sorry for the wall of text, but trust me, it works.

Edit: Make the breakfast a bit bigger, sure, but don't make it two big meals and 4 small ones or 3 big/3 small. Eat a bigger meal in the morning, a bigger one as close to your workout as possible, and make the others pretty close. And try to eat about an hour before you workout.

in order to lose weight you need to gain muscle. do some power lifting.

the reason is this: your muscles burn fat. they are your engine. the bigger your engine the more fuel (fat) the engine burns. jogging can actually deteriorate your muscles.

talk to a trainer and get a power lifting program going.
