It was proved wrong that the world was flat. Could there be something as significant as that to be proved wrong? I think space travel at faster than lightspeed will be proved to be possible.

I don't think that's possible ever the way the universe works, much like travel to the past. Existence itself will not allow it, hence why time slows down the closer you approach to the speed of light stopping you from ever getting there. I think it will be something about medicine or food.
I think that notions in the physics community of how exactly time works will undergo a fundamental shift in some way, and yes, I know that is pretty vague.StopThePresses
I was thinking maybe they would discover that the current theory of gravity is wrong, at least in part.

To which I reply, "Which one?" :PThat we are alone in the universe. Or at least that there are no other habitable planets within our range of perception.

Although 2012 being proved wrong may not be that major, it would be interesting to see peoples reactions after the date has past given we are still alive.

There are certain physical properties that change the faster one goes that would appear to preclude faster-than-light travel, but "time slowing down" is not one of them. :P

Meh, after 2012 they'd just make another date for the end of the world.

I agree, the discovery of a "Theory of Everything" will likely shake everything up this century, like relativity did for the 20th, and evolution did for the 19th. So, I'm hedging my bets and saying it will be something to do with physics.[QUOTE="Guybrush_3"][QUOTE="StopThePresses"]I think that notions in the physics community of how exactly time works will undergo a fundamental shift in some way, and yes, I know that is pretty vague.linkthewindow

It sure would be nice if we found out that we had a misunderstanding regarding the laws of gravity, and that helped explain away Dark Matter and Dark Energy. It just doesn't sit well with people that >80% of the mass in the universe is invisible and undetectable.that humans are capable of limitless ability to reason and rationalize reality. And that progress is determined by how much more stuff we can make than last year.
Climate change hasn't even been provenand most scientists claim its false, itsjust douchebags trying to scare ppl
into buying harmful light globes.
I'm thinking alot of foods, drinks and substances will be proven as harmful as smokes (eg fast foods, processed foods etc)
Not trying to scare anyone :) live life to the full because a few weeks ago a world leading virologist claimed with the increase in population
and consumption we'll be extinct in a hundred years, so live it up!

Neutron, revelant to my interests.

dec 2010 may not be the exact date of the alignment.nasa says it could happen between 2011-2018,some say it won't happen at all.others say we will have a polar shift.not sure what to believe.
It actually wasn't proven wrong that the world was flat. Recent scientists have discovered that the universe actually operates on a 2D planar system.....forget it, why bother explaining dimensional reduction on these forums.Vandalvideohow would the universe not operate on a 2D planar system when gravity is a simple man?
