Considering music has been around for millenia in some form in pretty much every culture that has existed, it'd be a real trick to figure out what the first piece of music was.

Need more info for this- The first recorded piece, oldest orally remembered piece or the first written piece? Beyond that info, I'll have to agree with the post which said 'clapping'.

Or i might go for the cheap gag, instead;

Since I am that old, i can tell you the first played piece was with my Neanderthal friends. Old Bonk had clubbed grunt on his big toe, and Grunt hollered rythmically as he jumped around in pain-first dance, too incidentally. I remember we all clapped as well. :P

The first written music, you mean? That's hard to say.

Well the first written piece will be much later than the first heard piece. I'm looking for the first ever heard. I was led to believe growing up than Beethoven was the first music piece ever.

:lol:

Beethoven's a composer, not a piece. Anyway, it's impossible to know. Ancient cultures were playing music and passing it along through oral tradition long before it was written out, and without having it written out, there's no way to know exactly when it was heard, or which region of the world can lay claim to the very first musical performance. As others have said, it was very likely clapping or singing thousands of years ago.

Oh, it's not a problem. I wasn't laughing at you, but rather at what I thought you had been taught. I wouldn't have found it especially unusual for a young child to believe Beethoven was a piece anyway. I had some rather peculiar beliefs when I was a young kid. :P
