I am a pretty cold person, but even for me that was a little coarse.

Strap a person so they are suspended between two trees back exposed to ground. Sharpen a series of bamboo chutes to sharp points. Bamboo can grow 5 feet in one day and is very durable and has amazing tensile strength. Think of those chutes slowly pressing their way up and into then through a human body as they grow. Chinese warlords felt this was the worst possible punishment for centuries.

Mental Torture

He was tortured horribly, but he said what finally broke him was not physical abuse, or even indefinite confinement and isolation. He said that what happened was that one day, out of nowhere, his jailers decided to free him. They informed him in the morning, had him take his things from his cell, and took him to a temporary holding area for final release processing.
The man waited there, and waited and waited. When he asked about his release, the jailers told him to be patient.
After the day had passed into night, the man was still waiting. Hours later, his jailers came for him and threw him back into his cell, with no explanation.

The man said that in prison, even under torture, he'd learned to numb his physical, mental and spiritual senses. The fake "release day" opened his heart back up and made him hope again. This was what his captors wanted, and it worked.

I'm guessing the worst kind of torture for a guy would be like that Kids In The Sandbox video.
