I never understood why people said "music is my life" or "i'd die if I had no music". But seriously, what makes music so significant? To me it's just sound and words someone made up to make some money.

Sounds and words made up to make money?
Music is about feeling..good/bad..it takes us wherever we want to go.
Your comment was way off base..The majority of us just want to reach out to people the only way we know how.Money comes with it but that isnt why we write.
And words? Plenty of music lacks words, and most musicians write music for fun not money.I never understood why people said "music is my life" or "i'd die if I had no music". But seriously, what makes music so significant? To me it's just sound and words someone made up to make some money.

I have to wonder what music you've been listening to if you think It's just "words made up to make money." If all you hear is the words, the lyrics. Then you need to listen closer.
Music is about creation and creativity. It's about making people FEEL something. Something that simple words could never make you feel. It's about blending emotion, thought, and sound into an experience that goes beyond It's individual parts.
Good music speaks for itself. With a good song you can strip away the words and the song still speaks to you, it still makes you feel something. If you take away the words to a song and you feel nothing, then it was never music to begin with. Not to downplay the importance a singer has in making music, but the words are only the context, not the meaning.
A lot about the history of humans revolve around music. It is used to show significance in an event and bring emotion to a scene. Music gives a feeling that touch, taste, and visuals just can not do.
"Without music to decorate it, time is just a bunch of boring production deadlines or dates by which bills must be paid." - Frank Zappa. I tend to agree wityh that ;)

I tend to see it the other way around. Life is a giant collage of untold numbers of different happenings somply coming together at once, our human existence is that which imposes deadlines and such upon the flux of existence. By that logic, music is simply reconnecting with that chaos of existence that we have alienated ourselves from.

Interesting veiw point. I think Frank Zappa saw it the same way as you, music helps escape from the deadlines that our human existence has imposed on us.
What's so significant about whatever the hell it is you like to do?cd_romOh god, whats the point in life at all *leaps off bridge*
Every once in a while an album will come along that makes you feel better about what ever situation you're in.
I've been going through a nostalgia fueled crises for the past few months and The Suburbs by Arcade Fire is helping me through it. Actually, it may be making things worse...but it is having a profound effect.
It's a passion for some of us, and takes a central role in our lives. It's not like life would cease to exist without music, but I'd find it far less meaningful for me, since, for me, so much of the pleasure of this existence comes directly in the form of music. Music also enhances most of the other activities I enjoy.
Music is a form or art or creativity, which are both are unique to Humans. In light of that, I'd say that music is something that defines what we are as Human beings. I'd say that music is just as significant as drawing, sculpting, writing, and every other uniquely Human artistic activity.
its hard to explain... but it just is a very important part of my life...
Its like intangible things become tangible through music... absract concepts and ideas become real and beautiful and haunting through music, where as without it they are just ideas... like love, suffering, hatred, anger...
Would I die if I didn't have music? No, I have other joys in my life... but without music, life would not be as full or as joyful...
Significance is a matter of perception. There are people who are apathetic to music, and then there are people like me whose emotions are stimulated by music with a magnitude unmatched by any other artform.

Dude plenty of music has been made without lyrics. Like Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, and Vivaldi. Music is significant because, like Kcube said, "Music is about feeling..good/bad..it takes us wherever we want to go".
Music makes us feel nostalgic. Maybe something great happened in your life and a certain song was playing during the event. You listen to the song later and it makes you feel good. Maybe something terrible happened in your life and a certain song was playing during that event, and you realize just how real the past is. Like a scar on your body, but in your mind. Sometimes we listen to music to just lift us up when we feel down, or get us dancing when we feel good.
Music sometimes makes us feel like we can escape the world. Even for just a fraction of a second.
And it's not just sounds and words. It's talent with a musical instrument, whether it be a guitar (Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton), bass (Cliff Burton, Chris Wolstenholme), Drums (John Bonham), or even the human voice (Aretha Franklin, Freddy Mercury, Axl Rose, Robert Plant).
And it's not just to make money. I mean sure, it sometimes comes with it, but it's not the reason music is made. It's mostly to speak your mind in an artistic way. To send a powerful message to billions of people like John Lennon did with his song "Imagine". To make a piece of art, whether it be with an orchestra or a man/woman and his/her guitar.

There's obviously nothing inherently significant about it. It's just sound waves travelling through the air. Which is exactly the same thing as someone's wife saying "I just ****ed your boss and I'm glad I did, you pathetic piece of ****!"
In any case, I'm not a serious music fan. But I've never been a fan of the whole "it's just sounds/pixels/light" argument. I mean...one can think of music as being silly, but one can surely find a better REASON than THAT. After all, it's still COMMUNICATION. And COMMUNICATION sort of implies that actual MEANING can be contained within such meaningless **** such as pressure waves being dispersed through an appropriate medium. To imply that music is irrelevant because it's just sound and words is to imply that COMMUNICATION ITSELF is meaningless. Which would be a very strange thing to say, considering that humans are a social species.

It's communication, pure and simple. Communication is also very broad...done for many reasons.
Music can ABSOLUTELY simply be sounds and words created solely for the purpose of making money. One can also ABSOLUTELY make music and refuse to actually make any money off of it.
