What's the best kind of bag for a dude to use in everyday situations?

A backpack would be the obvious choice, but if you can find a tote bag big enough to carry what you want, that would be good too.

Backpacks are a pain a) when on public transport and b) when you want to retrieve something quickly e.g. wallet or phone. Over the shoulder all the way - easy access and leaves your hands free - perfect...

Just buy a fannypack.
