Have you actually seen one in the wild or in your backyard? I was talking about spiders you see around where you live.

Anyway, but those Goliat's are huge. They eat small birds which is pretty crazy.

One time there was a baby huntman spider on our living room ceiling, then I got scraed, screamed, ran upstairs and hid in my room, ONLY TO SEE IT FOLLOWED ME UP THE STAIRS.

I am intensely scared of spiders and bugs, but spiders mostly, plus I live in Australia, so a baby spider is the size of an 8 car train.

For me, it's the Wolf Spider.

Image:Hogna helluo cropped.jpg

When I used to live in my old house, there were a lot of Black Widows. I thought they were scary. But once I moved to my new house, I saw a few of these Wolf Spiders running around. They put Black Widows to shame. They're #4 on the top 10 most dangerous spiders. Black Widows are #6.

These are scary little beasts. I haven't seen them for awhile after an exterminator came but I get scared when I sit on my carpet. Anyway, spiders frighten me, especially ones like these.

ASK_Story

Got any link showing that wolf spiders are dangerous at all? Because this is the first I've ever heard about that.

As a little side note, without wolf spiders, I would not exist. My mother and father first met when my mom was walking down the street and saw a small crowd of people watching something. So she then went over to see what everyone was looking at. So she walked over, and in the middle of thie crowd, there was this weird creepy dude playing around with a big ass wolf spider that had about 50 babies on its back. And my mom was like "eww, that's gross!" The next thing you know, the two of them are ****ing as if they're the last two people on the planet.

So I obviously take offense to anyone who "disses" the wolf spider. That's like dissing ME.

ASK_Story

Is it this, the Funnel Web Spider?

Image:Victorian funnelweb02.jpg

Yeah, Australia has scarier spiders than the US, and puts the wolf spider to shame.

I'd love to visit Australia one day but I'm scared to death of spiders. Those Australian spiders are crazy looking.

Australia has scary EVERYTHING.

Really dude, here in the USA, as far as venom is concerned, there's not much to be scared about. A few species of snake. A couple of different kinds of spiders. Alligators, I guess. And bears. Can't forget the bears.

Now, Australia does NOT have bears. But their crocodiles are 1000 times worse than american alligators. Just about all of their snakes are venomous to kill you. They have the deadliest spiders on earth. And even the ones that aren't deadly are often venomous enough that a bite will make you WANT to die just so the pain stops. There are the deadly jellyfish. Hell, they even have venomous MAMMALS. And ants an inch long that can kill some people with a single sting. It's like the entire country decided to look at the animals that live in YOUR country, and then said "pfft, I can make animals scarier than THAT."

Where I live in Canada we can't support large spiders due to climate thank god. Every Spider I've ever seen fit easily in a kleenex and was flushed accordingly.

According to the Wiki, they have venom but are not agressive unless provoked. So they are venomous.

I forget which site but they rank#4 on the Top 10 deadliest spiders. Black Widow was #6.

ASK_Story

From the wikipedia page..."Wolf spiders may or may not be aggressive but will inject venom freely if continually provoked. Symptoms of their venomous bite include swelling, mild pain and itching. Though usually considered harmless to humans, the bite of some species may be painful. In the past, necrotic bites have been attributed to some South American species, but further investigation has indicated that those problems that did occur were probably actually due to bites by members of other genera.[1] Australian wolf spiders have also been associated with necrotic wounds, but careful study has likewise shown them not to produce such results."

Yes, ALL spiders are VENOMOUS. I was questioning the claim that they are DANGEROUS. In fact, the wikipedia page on wolf spiders actually suggests that they are HARMLESS (despite being VENOMOUS).

Okay...for starters, let's look at the first site. As if the big pulsating arrows which point to ads weren't enough, we can look at the amatuerish appearance of the site. Looks like about as much effort went into creating that page as you or I would put into making a grocery list.

Let's also note the lack of scientific names.

And the lack of sources cited.

And then let's consider the fact that entries 7-10 were all "tarantula". :|

Ignoring that there's been no proven case of anyone ever being killed by a tarantula, "tarantula" is a VERY broad term referring to thousands of different species that span most of the planet. They couldn't be bothered to let us know WHICH tarantulas they were referring to?

And if entries 7-10 are identical, then it's not a top ten list. It's a top seven list. The fact that they ran out of ideas before getting to number 10, and then simply kept on repeating number 7 sort of shows me that they don't even have enough material to encompass a top 10 list. If you can't even think of 10 different spiders, then I'm really not gonna put much stock into what you say about spiders.

Wikianswers says about the same.

The bottom line is, they are venomous, just not lethal like the Banana Spider.

Black Widows aren't lethal but they can be bad for unhealthy people and kids or if not taken care of.

Actually, black widows can and do kill people. They are not USUALLY lethal, but neither are gunshot wounds.

When I lived in Hawaii years back, this was the one spider that was not enjoyable to run into, and kept me and my friends far from the cane fields:

Brown huntsman spider:

From Wiki:

"Brown huntsman spiders do not spin webs. These spiders are known to hunt by waiting quietly on a vertical surface (or even a ceiling) and then rushing forward when their prey gets within close range. Their exceptional agility and speed, as well as their ability to contort and squeeze through tight spaces, give them a strong advantage both in capturing prey and evading predators."

They are lightning fast, and these suckers can JUMP. Nasty things.

doanm

If I do recall that pic has been put under the heading of being caused by bites form different species of spider so I have big doubts as to that being a real brown recluse bite.

Besides, theres actually alot of controversy surrounding brown recluse bites. If you go down to the misdiagnoses section on the wiki it goes on and on about how there are numerous other causes for supposed necrotic brown recluse bites.

I still avoid them at all costs but they aren't that big of an issue. Brown Recluse bites are really rare because the spiders are.....well recluses and tend to just stay hidden. They aren't agressive in the least and the most common way people get bitten by them is by putting on a piece of clothing a recluse is hiding in.

Want a scary spider story? A lady I worked with had spider issues at an old house of hers. She decided it was time to move when she saw a black widow chasing her 4-year old around....

Spiders don't scare me because they are small and harmless.

Spiders don't really bother me for the most part... I've seen a few around my house. but for the most part I just leave them to their business. They eat all the other bugs that get in.

Not scary but a black widow. I wasn't playing around when I killed that thing. Had to hit it with the fly swatter I wasn't going near it. Once, I was laying on my bed and a small little spider (idk what it was) crawled right next to my head and I looked over and seen it. Sacred the **** outta me.

Yaaaaay I'm glad someone finally found out what it really was... I live in QLD, but we get them Aussie-wide... They are great to have as pets, ensures you have a pest free clean house.. XD Used to have one larger than a CD running up and down the ceiling, and yeh they're lightning fast! But they're pretty harmless... I had a baby Wolf Spider in my car not long ago on the way to the airport.. Could feel something run over my feet, so grabbed my mini torch and had a look.. Sooo cute.. ^^, Picked him up and played with him and let him out before getting to the air port.. All in all they aren't dangerous.. Just mis-understood really.. These won't jump at you unless you give it cause to.
