The reason I ask this is because somehow that XP Internet Explorer 2010 crap got on my computer and it took like 2 hours to get it off.

So I ask you, what is the worst virus you've ever gotten?

Before the last time I reformatted my computer, I got this virus that basically made it so whenever I clicked a link on google, it would take me to some spyware-ish website. Every once in a while the link would work like it was supposed to, but more often than not I was taken to the spyware link. This got really annoying really fast. It also slowed down my computer significantly.

I've got one called Alureon.G right now.

Linking me to spyware websites whenever I'm on the web, running a Malwarebytes scan as we speak...

My worst was just a pop-up one. Never had one serious enough to cause any damage.

ive been using computers since around 1996ish. The viruses back then were the kind that just ruined all the data you had on your hard drive. I remember when the CIH virus was the big thing. That erased your entire hard drive. Nowadays, viruses are much smarter. So much so, that most people who think they dont have one actually do have one. Theres always the smitfrauds that claim "you have a virus!! pay me to get rid of it" but botnets are the real problem. you may be hosting an IRC channel and not realizing it. You may be sending out spam etc. The really smart virus programmers make it so you never notice and people who think virus scanners are truly effective make me laugh. Which is why I dont use windows.

the worst I ever had was the one that would give you an error window saying something along the lines of "A fatal error has occurred, and your computer will shut down in 60 seconds. Save all your documents." Something like that. And at the top of it was a freaking timer counting down from 60 seconds. After that it would just shut down. The X at the top of the window was non-clickable, so no way to exit it.

At the time I only had 56k internet, and it was also the only computer in the house, so looking online for a solution was extremely difficult. I think I figured out on my own that the "error" wondow only popped up if i was online for too long. So I'd connect briefly enough to do a google search, disconnect, connect, click a link that seemed to have a fix, etc etc. don't remember how I actually disabled the virus, it was 6 or 7 years ago. But it was brutal =( Think I had to click start andsomehow forcefully shut down the program, and not through the task manager either, it was deeper in the system than that.

Googled and found a wiki page on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blaster_%28computer_worm%29

I HATE YOU STUPID BLASTER!!!

I use OS X and Linux so I don't get viruses anymore. The closest I've gotten to a virus is a game you can download for OSX called Lose/Lose.

My worst was pestering maleware which changed my desktop background into a biohazard symbol which if clicked took u to a website, created icons on my toolbar linking me to websites, and redirected my searches.

At the time I had McAfee which did a whole lot of shart. Most of these types of viruses are weak but the maleware I had was so bad that it even ran in safe mode so I couldn't take it off. I was forced to reformat my hard drive.

I've never had a computer virus. I use Ubuntu, PC-BSD, and OpenSolaris more than anything. I don't even browse the web on my Windows partition. I only play games on it. I don't download anything, I don't install anything,

I've had a few over the years. The worst was probably once I hit something (stupid me) it froze my computer then logged me off. At the time, I think my dad was about to do a system restore or something, but that gave me a scare.

The one I'm currently on seems to be "clean" but every time I start it up, the start menu bar vanishes for a few seconds, then reappears when ObjectDock loads. It might be some messed up/corrupted file, but I have reason to believe it was my fault :P. Other than that, I don't think it's affected anything else here.

I don't think if this was like a "keylogger" virus, or whatever you kids call these things, but someone charged some tickets to Alaska to my dad's credit card, which the credit card company found out and stopped luckily. It's either somebody got a hold of the credit cards and stole our info, or we bought something on the virus infected computer and that's how. Regardless, I'm kind of paranoid of buying stuff online now.

I don't remember the details but it always brought up windows trying to sell me some 2006 antivirus program. I'm pretty good about keeping my computer clean, and that's the only serious virus that I've had.

I have been lucky on viruses. Never caught one as far as I know at least.

However! I did cause a virus onto my brothers system unintentionally. It happened when I installed a pirate version of Mechwarrior 4 years ago. His computer never worked the same again until he replaced the hard-drive and motherboard both. When it started to install it suddenly made all the graphics on the monitor smudge, this happened on DOS also during the startup screen. The operating system was totally wiped out, you couldn't even get to the bios. It destroyed the hardware of his PC.

I had one that changed my background to porn. Every site that I went to was some random porn site. Later that day the virus crippled my computer so I couldn't even format it. I had to go to a computer programmer to get it fixed. Lesson of this ordeal: don't look at porn.

It was so bad, pop ups would continue to happen even when I didn't have a browser opened, and my virus protection software was even deactivated by it.

I don't know that name of the virus specifically, but the worse virus I've had on my system was didn't allow me to get on the internet, had a whole lot of pop ups, didn't allow me to open my anti virus, and didn't allow me to download anything on my computer. I managed to get lucky and restore my computer to an earlier restore point. Then I was able to open my anti virus software, where it took care of the virus that went dormant on my system..... The worst virus I dealt with on someone else system was "vista network security 2010". (Or something like that) The S.O.B didn't allow the desktop to boot at all and kept telling me I had a virus on the computer. I couldn't alt+ctrl+del my way around it. I was however able to load safe mode, however the problem now was the anti virus software didn't detect it. I had looked online and found out that the only way to remove it was to go into the registry and delete it. Long story short, I had download software meant to deal with the virus, put it on my flash drive, took it the computer I was working on, then allowed it to remove the virus....

The worst one I had was a rootkit. I had Avira AntiVir at the time, and it would detect it, but everytime I would try to delete it, it would say "File Not Found". I tried other antiviruses and they would say the same. So I was like screw it, it's probably not that bad. A week later I scanned my computer with Avira and various Anti-Spyware programs, and found and deleted a good 20 trojans. They were all back by the next day. Everytime I would delete the trojans, the rootkit would go back and put them on my computer again. After a weeklong, part time battle, I was like **** it, I'm reinstalling windows. Problem solved. :D

I would advise running linux or bsd on the side to do most of the things you do such as web browsing and checking to see if a file is infected before running it (linux and bsd can run some windows programs) this way you can avoid most viruses and use windows when you need it, and always have a backup plan.

I did that a while back with Ubuntu, but my computer had some issues with it. I figured out that the source of the rootkit was a pirated version of Spyware Doctor that I was using at the time so I decided to switch to free/legal anti-malware programs. Haven't had a problem since. :D That being said, Linux is a pretty good OS, if it decides to work on your computer. :P

I don't know if this was true, but my friend said he got a virus and a character appeared on his screen.. Can't remember who he said it was now.. But it would drag his files into the bin and stop him from doing things, and the character would react with the actions.

You mean that purple anime thingy? I've had something similar to that.
