I think that when people say "Americans" when they only refer to U.S citizens, it should be called racism. Indeed, that's what it is, because America is named after Amerigo Vespucci, and that man was not directly linked to the US in any way. Opinions, opinions, ok?

Do you know where Colombus first landed? He landed in Haiti/Dominican Republic. He spent most of his in Latin colonies, not in Anglo-Saxon ones, so it is clear that Vespucci's influence is greater on Latin colonies than anything founded by the English. And yes, the hate itself might be puerile, but when a single country is always called "America" when the continent itself is "America", it feels like a self-proclaimed egocentric, megalomaniac statement.

WTF are you talking about? Those from the US are Americans. The US is part of America. You seem to be very confused.thegerg
Ok, citizens of Guatemala are called Guatemala, from Mexico, Mexicans, from the US, Americans. Note the pattern? Why don't we call them Yankees or citizens? Shouldn't I call Hondurans Americans then? Should I call Brazilians Americans? That's why I get vexed, because US citizens only get labeled as "Americans".

While the continent is North America, the only nation using the term "Americans" is the United States of America.

Canada prefers Canadians, Mexico is Mexicans, and so on.

Your argument doesn't work.

I'm not from the U.S. and I'm an American, so when someone calls out "Americans", I respond. If they want to call someone from the U.S specifically, say U.S citizen or something of the sort, not American. Even north-American can include anything from Mexico to U.S and Canada.

How is that racism? Racism is declaring that your race is more superior to that of another race.

1) American - is not a race but a collection of various races and cultures thrown into one very large melting pot.
2) It's not derogatory in any way. It doesn't promote the superiority of one race over another.

Therefore: calling people from the United States "Americans" is not racist.

Exactly, my point, the US is the only one that uses the term "Americans". Why don't we calm Hondurans Central Americans or Colombians South Americans? Should we call US citizens North Americans then?

If you want to call citizens of Mexico, or Guatemala, or the US, or Horduras "American" then go ahead. You would be correct in doing so. Where in the hell are you getting the racism angle from? I'm guessing that you're one of those people that has arguments that no one else is participating in simply because you want to complain about something.

Same as above.

Geez, "U.S." is a shortened version of "U.S.A.":?

Semantics is nothing to argue about, since American is not a racial term. Aside from being called an American, we go by the lesser-used, more generic term of "Westerner".

We've been using the term America since the Declaration of Independence (and we were still a British colony then).

What is the name of the country? "The United States of America". Using that name, what do you propose citizens call themselves? The only logical answer is "Americans", coming from the last word in the name of the country, "America." If Canada was named "The United Provinces of America," then there would be a problem, but they are "Canada", so they are "Canadians."

And Hondurans aren't referred to as Central Americans? Colombians aren't referred to as South Americans? Man, that's news to me, because I hear that a lot.

United States of America that you don't under stand?

You know what i find racist to the African people? Black people born and raised in America call them self's African American. I always look at my friends and ask them, Are you from Africa? No, thank you You dont see anyone else going around in U.S saying I'm German American, I'm French American, Chinese American, ect. If your born and raised here your American nothing more.

only people who should be calling them self's African American is The people who was forced to come here and be slaves and the people who is from Africa and have moved here and became citizens.

I see the issue now. What you need to do is take time to understand the issue at hand and formulate your own opinions/arguments rather than copying something from somewhere else without understanding what you're talking about. From now on you should avoid making such dramatic accusations as "racism" without understanding the issue.

Actually, I started that argument, that was merely something I posted later on, so I, indeed formulate that opinion, not someone else.

That's another good point, and I also am fully aware of it, Francisco Morazan being basically the heart of that. Also: United Mexican States. Perhaps it does not say "United Mexican States of America" but the states is there. NOTE: I am not Mexican nor I am too friendly towards them, but I am only trying to post something related.

I call them gringos or Yankees, preferably the former. And FYI, gringos is much more shorter than Americans. Gringos was derived from "Green go!" which Latin Americans shouted to the so-called "Americans" when they invaded their countries.

You can call yourself american if you want. However, I would suspect that most people in the world, not just from the US, would think you were referring to someone from the US. American is just a term that ended up identifying people from the US. I don't know how it happened, but it's been used for quite an extensive amount of time. It could have been that europeans used that to describe the original US people. Or it could have been that the original US people used that to describe themselves. Does it really matter? I'm sure if the US was called by some other name, they'd go by that. But most people prefer the short term american to stating "A citizen of the united states of america" .

Its really not hard to understand. If you live in the U.S but was born in Argentina you're American. If you live in Argentina your Argentinian. Thats how it works.

You have officially brought up an important point. If it was used by them to describe themselves wouldn't that be egocentric? I mean, after all, the British colonies were not the first ones in Americas, it was the Spanish ones, and if we want to get deeper, the Vikings arrived at America before every other European.

Wikipedia shows the first printed use of "America" for the U.S. was in the Declaration of Independence, the "unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America".

[QUOTE="raimgamer"][QUOTE="sonicare"] Funny that you mention racist terms. . . . . Jolt_counter119

Exactly! Now you are thinking gringos or Yankees can be racist! The same can be side if I am an megalomaniac and believe I am "American". What if my parents are from the U.S but I was born in Argentine? Should I still be called an American?

Its really not hard to understand. If you live in the U.S but was born in Argentina you're American. If you live in Argentina your Argentinian. Thats how it works.

And what if you stay in Argentina? Is he still American?

This actually makes me curious, what do we call someone form Turkministan a turk, but then what do we call some one from Turkey?

lordreaven
That is also a problem where I live. Lots of people that emigrated during the Ottoman Empire days are still called "Turks" to date here. Are they still Turks?

[QUOTE="sonicare"] You can call yourself american if you want. But most people prefer the short term american to stating "A citizen of the united states of america" .raimgamer

You have officially brought up an important point. If it was used by them to describe themselves wouldn't that be egocentric? I mean, after all, the British colonies were not the first ones in Americas, it was the Spanish ones, and if we want to get deeper, the Vikings arrived at America before every other European.

I think you're trying to make a point that just isnt there. The name of the country is the united states of america. Obviously people are going to shorten it to something that's quicker to say. I don't think it's egocentrioc, I think it's just convenient.
