What's when only U.S Citizens are called "Americans"?

I've gotten in the habit of referring to the U.S. as America, I try to check myself whenever I do that, but when it comes to what the actual citizens are called I don't see a problem. What exactly do you propose we call ourselves? United Statesians?**** that noise, I'm into the whole brevity thing.
