I used to love the history channel, always had great shows but I feel its gone way downhill with them barely showing anything relevant anymore. I really don't care about Ice road truckers or Ax Men. I want to learn about the past, not see whats happening in the present.

I glad I'm not the only one who noticed.

I miss the old history channel. The fact that Pawn Stars, Ice Road Truckers, Ax Men, Top Shot, and whatever other nonsense that appears is crap doesn't help either.

Gangland is alright though.

And last year, there was this special hosted by some comedian about to handle the holidays. WTF does that have to do with history?

Years ago, History channel was great. Shows like Conquest were really cool. It also had a lot of documentarys.

Yeah now a days its garbage. Modern Marvels? that's not even history.

All the history shows seem to have moved to History Channel International (separate from The History Channel). It's actually good it did. Now, History Channel International, Nat Geo, and The Military Channel are within a few clicks of the remote from each other.

Add also The Science Channel within that grouping.

PBS should be your documentary source. The History Channel is more like The Conspiracy Channel - really sad.

the History channel is damn lame now, its ridiculous that I get excited when something about history is on the History channel. Travel channel has the same problem, the majority of the shows are about food now.

Pawn Stars fits because it mostly shows antique items and explains the history behind them. It's the other ones like Ice Road Truckers, Ax Men, and the others that have no place on the channel. I guess it's no different than MTV and music.

Whenever there's nothing to watch on Comedy Central, I usually switchover to History. When there's nothing on History, I am greatly confused and do not know what to do. I just paralyze into a state of fear of nothing to watch on television.

Ratings. A lot of people stopped caring so much about history and more about modern things. The spirit of history is still evident in the channel and arguably in some of its modern programs, but they cater to a different demographic now. One that will actually watch the shows on its channel. If you want to see it change, stop watching it. Ratings are the key factor for most if not all of what shows up on TV. If enough people stop watching what they're airing, they'll change again to suit the needs of the demographic. This is true of most channels.

Yup. The Dogfights and Battle 360 (Enterprise and Patton) series have moved to History Channel International. Oh well. I liked Dogfights enough that I bought the 2 season DVDs.

I also like The Universe. I can't remember where I saw it last. I think it too moved to HCI.

Pawn Stars and another show with a similar concept that I forget the name of are the only shows that interest me now on the History Channel. and the occasional movie, but that hardly counts.

They really have had a lot of garbage on lately.

I think Pawn Stars is good for History Channel because it teaches you about the stuff they take in. (guns, chests, memorabilia, etc.) Gangland is awesome cuz you learn about the gangs and history of them. The rest of them are dumb and dont belong on History. I wish they'd stick to stuff like the Civil War and Revolutionary War documentaries..those were EPIC imo

Perhaps American Pickers?

Anyhow, I enjoy all of History's current programming, albeit the fact it has nothing really to do with History. I just think the shows are really cool and well, they appeal to me. Think me a dolt or idiot or whatever for enjoying them, whatever, I think they're honestly good shows.

A bit more on topic, whenever I do have that feeling to watch something other than all the conspiracy crap that dominates during most of the day for me, History International is quite the great source of the old shows.

Bigfoot is part of history. He aided Abraham Lincolnin his struggle. He went missing after that. Lincoln sent out messengers to find him but he was nowhere to be found. Even today, museumsare still searching for his corpse.

I think IRT and Ice Roads are fine TV shows, they shouldn't really be on History tho, I don't see the Historic Value, they need to incorperate History into it. I really like Pawn Stars, American Pickers, and the shows like that, they incorperate the History and the shows are really good if ya ask me.

I've noticed lately tho, when History does its real History TV shows, its more them just stating all their opinions. If they don't do that they make things up or are just very inacurate. Heck sometimes they do shows based on things that haven't happened yet (All those TV shows about Aliens and stuff, how is that History? They don't do anything History related on those shows...)

Agreed, but the other things like 'Swamp People' really? What is the point... and Ax Men, it isn't pointless, but not very History Based, its to much reality TV. Its like Deadliest Catch for Discovery, I don't see any point in it :P

I prefer the current history channel programming (Pawn stars, American pickers) over the old History channel programming (24 hours of WW2 documentaries.)

It's about as much about history now as it was then. Since back then they didn't cover anything that didn't have to do with Hitler.

Well discovery could show COPS for all I care. They don't need to stick to any strict rules of what types of shows=okay for discovery.

I get the feeling Ax Men isn't all that popular. Swamp People as well.

As for why they switched to this? Easy. The past programming style did not get good ratings. Pawn Stars and American Pickers have been basically their highest rated shows of all time and consistently pull high ratings. Thus they've started alot of shows that have to do with peoples lives/jobs. They've been premiering quite a few series lately. In the past few months Theres been..

Stan Lee's Super Humans

Swamp People

That gun show I can't remember the name of

ITT Deadliest Roads

American Restorations.
