I guess it's because Coors and the like are all imported - plus taxes. There's likely incentives in the pricing to encourage people to buy beers brewed within the province (although I would do it anyway because they taste a whole **bleep**-ton better).

If someone's really concerned about pricing, though, brewing your own beer is absolutely dirt cheap, and with minimal effort it can taste fantastic. I'd just avoid the powdered kits, as there are surprisingly good liquid wort kits for about $25 for about 23L. That works out to less than 40 cents a bottle (ignoring bottling costs, though you can reuse glass bottles yourself), and you're free to add whatever you want.

So if you get a stout kit you can throw in some toasted oats, or coffee, or chocolate, or whatever. And best of all, you get a really unique perspective on the beer brewing process.

Another Boulevard great, Tank 7. It's heavy, being somewhere around 9% I think, but it's amazing. A smooth ale with all kinds of citrusy notes, most notably grapefruit.

Maredsous, specifically 8 and 10.

As far as American beers, I used to love Red Rat. But that's no longer brewed... pity.

I'm actually not a big fan of beer (I prefer hard liquors and mixed drinks mostly). But I do like Blue Moon, Corona and Sam Adams. Bud Light, Keystone and all that other cheap crap just makes me feel sick if I drink more than 2 of em.

Guinness, Yuengling or if I just want to get snookered Rolling Rock. (Yeah I'm from Pennsylvania)

I do like craft beers especially Wheat beers, but none come to mind as a favorite.

Yeah I've been regularly buying alcohol for 5 years now and have never in my life seen regular keystone either. Ever. I just assumed there was only light.

Pirate700

There's basically no purpose to non-light Keystone. It's a dirt cheap party beer meant to be consumed in large volumes and as quickly as possible. Flavor isn't even remotely an important factor.

Guinness is the correct answer. Not only is it good for you, it's the perfect food. Low in calories, high in iron. Guinness is the correct answer. It's also a proven fact that the group at the bar drinking Guinness are the happiest group.

Not if I'm part of that group. I find Guiness to be repulsive. I don't mean that as an insult to the beer though. I just really don't like ales. I like to go the refreshing lager rought.

I don't think I cared for it all that much the first time I had it but now it's one of my favorite beers, plus I like to buy it because it helps the Irish economy.

Acquiring a taste for something is literally training your brain to be tricked into enjoyment. You have to tell yourself you like it and eventually you will (in my experience). I'm now trying to develop a taste for good whiskey, which is basically 10x harder than beer.

I actually find Guinness really bland. I love porters and stouts and to me Guinness tastes like cold coffee with the slightest hint of carbonation (well, you know what I mean).

Even the one I brewed myself (my first batch of brewed beer, ever) was better than Guinness, as it was richer, creamier, and you could actually taste the grains. Making a low calorie, light stout seems kind of counterproductive, although for some reason Guinness is insanely popular. It also reminds me of Corona in that it's a beer that barely tastes like a beer.

edit - the alcohol content of Guinness is a joke as well, though that's probably also a factor in it being somewhat tasteless.

Are you talking about the mass-market "Guinness Draught" they sell at bars and most stores or the original extra stout variety?

On that note, I once went to an "Irish pub" near me in California and asked for Guinness Extra Stout, the bar tender didn't even know what I was talking about. I left and never went back.

Neither did I, because it's much more simple and palatable. Mass produced lagers are heavily filtered and contain little barley and no hops. Though I will say that some lagers like Keystone are actually repulsive to me because they don't even taste like beer.

I like craft beer because it's just more interesting to drink, every one has a little different mix of ingredients instead of being homogeneous like mass market beers.
