Hannibal
just recently watched the first few episodes on prime. it's got like an 8.6 on imdb but feels a bit gimmicky to me. not sure about the lead character. empathy as a super power is a bit 🙄 he's a bit odd and not very likeable, and the reluctant partnership with super suave super chef lector is a bit of a stretch. a lot of intellectual characters and dialogue masking what seems to be quite a simplistic plot. jury still out for me
@Macutchi: In truth I should have gone for Twin Peaks. I had a brain drain on that one. I like the actors in Hannibal, though.
@Macutchi: Wasn't keen either. The thing I particularly hated was how it presented the murders and killers are big brains doing sophistic art.
In the movie (the good one), Buffalo Bill is presented as a fairly realistic and believable character. His method of getting victims is to feign disability, whack them on the head and shove them in the back of a cheap looking car. Which is basically what Ted Bundy done. Lives in a shit-hole. And clearly off his tits, like Ed Gein.
Hannibal is initially presented as someone "above it all", but when it gets to the escape sequence it's basically the most barbaric sequence in the movie, turns into an animal and his "art" (the guy hung up like angel) sure as shit isn't presented as sophisticated.
Guess what trying to say think Silence Of The Lambs feels grounded and grimy whereas Hannibal felt "Look at me, i'm clever"
Shout out to Brian Cox in Manhunter as well, who plays it totally low-key. IMO way better than Hopkins hamming it up in Red Dragon where it becomes self-parody.
@uninspiredcup: Not a fan of Brian Cox' portrayal. Watched Manhunter last year. Doesn't seem like a cannibal to me. Liked it a lot without Cox. Which is a shame because Cox is typically a good actor. Guess I'm used to the Anthony Hopkins' version of Lecter. I like Mads Mikkelson's version as well.
I'd say DragonBall z was so amazing to me as a young kid, but not anymore. But I'll still put it on my list.
One piece is another show I used to love but it's dragging on so long
The tower of God is great
I've watched some K dramas that I also loved.
It's a shame that western stuff is falling so behind the content from Japan and the rest of Asia. I'm not really a fan of Chinese stuff though, their crap just makes me laugh at their stupidity.
@blaznwiipspman1: Do you watch any Hong Kong series? They're generally not known for deep, high quality TV series, but if you're into series from Asia, I suggest When Heaven Burns (if you can find it with English subtitles). It uses themes of cannibalism and rock music as a metaphor for the state of Hong Kong's society and its social climate.
@one_plum: no, I haven't seen Hong Kong stuff, I just assumed it was the same as Chinese stuff. I just didn't like the whole getting powerups from having sex with virgins thing. Seemed to be a theme there, and it's just stupid and backward. Trust me I'm not even a feminist, but the stupidity and ridiculousness of it just turned me off the entire countries content.
@blaznwiipspman1: Chinese media and Hong Kong media are vastly different (though I don't know how true this statement is in the future). In fact, I'd say the people in HK have a strong aversion to anything from China.
its a shame, its pretty hard to tell the difference between chinese and hong kong content. China has ruined the reputation of not just HK, but also taiwan. Any good HK stuff I could watch?
As for live-action stuff, there's only 2 that I've never actually completed but seen a fair amount of:
1. Everwood
2. Revolution
Both ironically got cancelled.
Other than that, I did enjoy what I saw of Breaking Bad and can never get to the second episode of GoT. Not sure what it is.
There's plenty of Anime & animated shows in general that I enjoy but there's far too many to list.
One piece is another show I used to love but it's dragging on so long
Absolutely adore One Piece. Not sure how much you've seen, but I'd say that the stuff post timeskip hasn't been that great. It's been watchable for sure, but something is just lacking. This is coming from somebody who watches the Anime and reads the Manga. The peak for me was from the start of Water 7 all the way to the end of Impel Down. Marineford was significant but just didn't grab me. As for the series currently, I'm not exactly enjoying the Wano arc. It had promising beginnings but I am finding it pretty hit-and-miss.
If you're watching the Anime, a good tip is to let the episodes build up and view them in chunks. The pacing is bearable that way.

Hong Kong series often lack the quality of K dramas, but as mentioned earlier, When Heaven Burns is a good character-driven drama of how three friends' lives are changed after they resorted to cannibalizing their friend after a mountaineering trip gone wrong.

I really liked "Ashes Of Love", the production values, music score and more "innocent" story-telling where is unashamedly mush was quite endearing.
@speeny: the main problem with one piece is the passion of oda has dropped and honestly nobody can blame him for it. It's been on going since 1998 I believe, so 23 years non stop one piece. It's kind of amazing that oda has been able to keep up with it without the quality degrading too much. I mean look at bleach, the first few arcs are absolute the best of anime, then after that it just goes down hard. For anime, you need to be able to end the story at some point, better sooner than later, otherwise it's going to bring down the entire series. That's kind of where we are with one piece.
