But the fact is women DO get pregnant and DO have weaker strength than men, handicaps ARE inefficient in many cases. Hispanics being hot headed and blacks being lazy are just stereotypes.Famiking

Yes, they are just stereotypes. But why should there not be rules to stop them from being acted on, just like there are rules to stop companies from not hiring handicapped people if there is a position available which they could perform with little to no accomadation.

That's what anti-discrimination laws are for. If I didn't hire a black person because he was black, that is discrimination. If I hired a black person because he was black, even though he lacked many skills, that is affirmative action.

People have this misconception about Affirmative Action in the workplace. You hire whoever you want, but the government will only give you grants and contracts if you meet a certain percentage of each race.

That's worse. Giving money to criminals? What have we reduced to?

People who practice discrimination.

Even with Affirmative Action, an employer cannot hire someone because of race. Whether black, hispanic, asian or white.

Too many people have the misconception that Affirmative action is hiring anyone that's not white.

Read here for a good explantion Affirmative Action.

It is hiring people because they're not white. Business will hire a non-white so they can get grants, it's pretty simple.

Then that's a problem with the people owning the business not Affirmative Action itself.

If there was no affirmative action, they wouldn't be doing it.

Sorry for the late reply, I'm studying so I'm giving myself 1.5 minutes of free time for every minute I study. So I just got back from a 20-minute study session and I'll be on for 30 minutes >_>

It's an abhorrent practice. Qualifications should ONLY be based on academic qualities, and nothing else. Affirmative action only shows and discriminates differences, when those should be ignored and invaluable.

I'm fence sitting, with no visible options either side right now. :?

1. Workplace- Every citizen should have a Tax Paying job.

2. Education- Every citizen should have enough education to secure a Tax Paying job.

So I don't know if this is ProAA or ConAA. I do know that neither criteria is being meet very effectively today, and I honestly doubt it was ever a matter of discrimination alone. Perhaps we are atempting to pinpoint a deeper issue at work here?

Wow, this thread really took off, I wasn't expecting that. I skimmed through most of it and I really liked most of what Chessmaster wrote. Indeed, the central problem is not the unfairness of affirmative action, but the fact that it is a poor method of dealing with discrimination.

Im sorry, but this is a stereotype as well. I know plenty of women that could out hussle and out lift alot of men any day of the week.

As far as the handicapped bit goes, youre mostly right, but I do know a police officer with only one arm.

Well, it may be a stereotype, but one with a biological basis.

Affirmative Action was a terrible idea. Hey let's counter racism against black people by making a legal program to be racist against white people...thanks Washington.
