Well, if you're all in a group together talking and whatnot, she's likely just gauging interest. Talk to her away from the group(that way there's no outside pressure or limitations on what can be said).

Well, always remember that (1) She is a human being, thus talking to her like any other human being would be a good step in the right direction. There's never any reason to be intimidated. (2) If you're at school, on lunch break, or during breaks right after c|ass or something. Maybe right after school. In person is a mega-plus. (3) Talk about something that's very general and non-threatening. For instance, don't think a good way to break the ice is talking about pro-life pro-choicedebates. :P Something like movies or music is usually a sure-fire easy topic.
Turn into a stalker and follow her around and make odd calls to her phone in the middle of the night, that is sure to get her attention... and that of the local police too if you are lucky.
Do NOT let his girl be a "what-if" girl that you'll think back and kick yourself for. Talking isn't that hard. Just ask her if she's having fun and let the conversation roll from there.
