First of all, I like to know what connection speed and service you guys uses to get online and download big files?

When are we going to have 40 gigabits per second download speed or even close to that providing at our homes.

In this news , Last summer a 75-year-old woman from Karlstad became the envy of internet users worldwide.

With her blistering 40 gigabits per second connection, Sigbritt Löthberg had the world's fastest internet connection - many thousands of times faster than the average residential link and the first time ever that a home user had experienced such a high speed.

So after nine months with the ability to download a full high definition DVD in just two seconds or access to 1,500 high definition HDTV channels simultaneously,

You would have to be living right next to the CO of your ISP or right next to a fiber pool or remote.

hell we don't even have fiber optic cable around our neighborhood... like FIOS from Verizon.

Right now I'm using Roadrunner at 15mb/sec.

I mean that is where we'll be for the people that have commerical availbility in large cities, basically there will be a city-wide Wi-max or a direct-connection, where direct is faster, but wireless for laptop, computers, ipods..... blahj blah blah.. people in Oklahoma and Montana will have internet, but where we are now is probably what they could have... it might be to 1 gig if advancement in technoogy occurs... more than likely not though... 2 or 3 gig might be by 2020.. or earlier.. you never can truly know..

Perhaps sooner than you think, but maybe not as fast. Fiber Optic I assume allows for that, and AT&T seems to be making lots of moves offering the ficer optic service with lots of faster better deals than what Comcast/Time Warner offer with RG-60 copper cable.

I have a fiber optic connection. My old employer is paying for in the hope that I will go back and work for them after classes :o

I have 8mb down and 2mb up. Things go very fast. But not as fast as that old lady from Sweden (It is in Sweden right?)

Since you are on cable it depends on how many people are on the same connection as you. The more people the slower.

The company I worked for is coming out with HD IPTV. They already have SD IPTV but they will soon be offering 12mb over fiber so they can stream HDTV channels and HD VOD to peoples houses. Currently the only company in Oregon to offer IPTV too bad I dont live in Canby.

I don't see how any current home PC could even properly utilize such bandwidth. And even if it could, I'm not sure what the practical purpose would be.

it won't be too far away, look at how fast we went from 56k to highspeed broadband. it will just take time for companies to lay the fiber optic cable.

lol oh man, just ONE gig of download speed and I'd be in internet heaven. -Although, imagine how much piracy would just boom, everyone would start downloading more because it wouldn't take 2 hours for their downloads.

Sweet MOTHER OF JESUS.

40 gigabits per second? I think my brain just haemoraged. WITH JEALOUSY.

Where I live, New Zealand, we have one true internet provider who basically has total control over the loop in the entire country. Its an ancient copper loop that is slow and highly unreliable, even by traditional copper loop standards. There are of course other providers, but they mostly suck major you-can-guess. The speed is listed as 'as fast as possible', now that the government passed laws preventing illegal, deliberate line slowing by the telecomunication companies. However that translates to 'how many people in your exchange area are using the internet'.

Which of course means, you get a max of about 300Kbs downloads, and only if almost no-one is awake and using the internet, and you're downloading from a high-bandwidth Direct Download site like Steam or whatever; or torrenting an extremely popular file, like one of Dattebayo's fresh releases.

Our prices are also amongst the highest in the entire world. America and Australia don't know jack' when it comes to internet pricing. You ain't got NOTHING on what we have to deal with. Our internet is nowhere near as slow as it was a mere 3 years ago but we have amongst the most restrictive capping systems in the world. Measly download caps allow for crap-all usage per month, unless you want to splash out another $40 per month to get another 5-12 gigs of combined download and upload.

It doesn't help that we are a good 10,000 Km from America and specifically California, where of course most of the data from the rest of the world is routed through, causing a TITANIC chokepoint of legendary proportions (not just epic).

So, when are we going to get 40 gigabits per second download speed? I think after governments start getting in on the act and helping companies fund the research and development of new technology, and help implement it, and regulate fair pricing. SHOCK HORROR!

I SUGGESTED REGULATION!

Why? Ever heard of net neutrality? If you haven't, go research it now, still can't find anything? Your ISP's probably blocked the important websites regarding that issue ;D.

I also suggested that the governments help research and implement new technologies. Why? BECAUSE ITS OUR MONEY. Why are people so afraid of suggesting our taxes go into helping push fowards one of the most useful tools in the HISTORY OF MANKIND, that we PAY FOR WITH OUR OWN MONEY. How about instead of funding some nationwide cultral project or awareness project we spend the money on the internet.

THEN people can have their awareness raised OVER THE FREAKING INTERNET.

You're putting the USA and Australia in the same class when it comes to Internet pricing?!?

We'll propably have that capability once we are advanced enough to achieve this kind of speed for our internet. It's just a matter of time before we are able to do this since technology has improved faster and more efficient over the years.
