I think it might have gotten popular after Attack of the Show started a segment about epic fails... idk really.

i.................HATE THAT PHRASE!
same with ones like "you win (or fail) at life" etc, i have no problem with slang but it sounds so immature in my opinion. this vid here makes me happy because it describes it perfectly in my opinion (notice i didnt say "imo", laugh out loud  )
"Fail" caught on after Blazing Star for the Neo Geo came out in 1998. Its Engrish losing screen said "you fail it", which was used as meme and was eventually shortened to "Fail" some time in the early 2000's, probably in multiple communities simultaneously.
Epic Fail probably developed in MMOs because of "Epic Quests" that some humiliated themselves attempting, hence when people would normally write "Fail!" they wrote "epic fail!" because they failed an epic quest. This also happened within multiple MMO communities independently of one another, so it's impossible and misleading to point to one group as having originated it.
i first saw it in wow, pre-tbc. But, the people that said it were ex-counterstrike gamers, so it could be from 1.6. Who knows.BiancaDK
Hmm? What do you mean by that?
