Total geek when I started disecting the hardware components of the computer my dad purchased back in 2002 just to make sure it could play Mafia 2 and SoF 2 :P
Guess mine was when I put a theme of Darth Vader on my phone and changed my ringtone to the Imperial March, it fits quite well to the design of the phone too.
I knew for a while that I was a nerd but in the 7th grade, I realized that I got all A's, wore glasses and the realization that I needed braces, loved video games and when I made an account here... :P
When I was playing catchphrase with my classmates and the answer was "Planet Krypton" so I said "The place where Superman is from." They all thought I was weird for knowing that. I don't think it classifies me as a nerd though...maybe I am just in denial

When I realized I knew far more about video games than the average person. I'm sure my knowledge is on par with everyone else here on Gamespot, but compared to the rest of the population, we are far superior in our knowledge. It's something I can pride myself in. :P
I guess when I get warm and excited in a certain way when my boyfriend talks about video games and computers, and other electronics and things in that area. Also when I was too embarrassed to say I was on a gaming forum at school because no one would believe me since I'm female.
I think what makes someone a geek is when they seem almost too into techonlogy amirite? I like video games for the escapism, but I dont get really excited or nothing. I have a good knowledge of computers and stuff, but I hardly know anything about programming. I think the only real nerds/geeks are ones who can make a program. Then again, I did buy a psp and alter it to do stuff, so maybe I was just a bit geeky, but I think it was more being impulsive than being geeky. Funny, I was going to ask what constitutes the label of geek, I dont think liking the lord of the rings should make someone feel different, it is just escapism. We all need some escapism and not be obsessed with the mundane aspect of life.
When someone teased me for knowing a lot about computers and scifi and comics and games. I subsequently wrote a speech about it and entered the school speech contest in the comedy category. I lost to some girl making an inspirational speech about racism, but I was called Adam The Nerd from then on.
I fit a lot of descriptors, granted a geek being one of them, I wouldn't label myself solely as a geek, but I definitely have a geek side. Not exactly sure if there was ever a discovery, rather, I simply discovered videogames back in the 90's and with that discovery awoke my inner-geek.
Now that I think about it I would have to say the moment I realized I was a nerd was when I got caught taking apart my parents old TV at the age of 13. Taking it apart could just be labeled curiosity but putting it back together in working order is only something a nerd can do. 8)
i dont really think gaming or being into computers or anime is really nerdy i actually know alot of cool people who are into that stuff. I think nerdy is like when u maybe cut yourself off from anything outside of what ever it is your into, and just focus on nothing but that. anime, pc, forums etc. Kinda like a outcast not very sociable with others especially if your not into what they like to do kinda of odd personality.

Being an outcast and being a nerd/geek doesn't go hand in hand. It really has nothing to do with being a nerd/geek. The reason they were outcast (back in the day) is because other people stayed away from them. Now it's accepted as most people tend to not fit the jock/cheerleader stereotype now-a-days.
