When you buy action figures do you open them or not? I think im gonna start buying action figures just to collect. Not sure if I should just leave them unopened or take them out. I think im gonna just open them and display them. Keep them in a plastic bag so they dont get dirty. Might buy a display case too.

I haven't bought an action figure since I was a kid. But I guess I will go with open it. No sense in keeping them in box if you can't play with them. But that's kid in me speaking :P Collector's don't frown on me

Buying action figures is not limited to young people (for those stating that you must be young to buy them trying to look mature). I particularly don't buy them, but I have some from some games collectors edition. I haven't opened them yet but you should do as you please unless you're planning to resell them in the future.

if I was to get an action figure these days it would be purely to sit on it because it was supposed to go up in value, then I'd sell it on Ebay

And I bet most people above 5th grade don't buy them to play with, but instead to put on display because they like looking at it. Just because they're primarily targeted towards a younger audience in no way means that older people can't enjoy them. I certainly hope you don't enjoy any Disney movies such as Lion King, because those are targeted at children as well. ;)

Do what the hardcore Japanese otaku do. Buy 3.

One for playing with/displaying, one for value, and one as backup.

But if you can't unwrap them you can't play with them in the bath and if you can't play with them in the bath you can't send them on an adventure to the secret cave.

Which, lets face it is the main reason for action figures in the first place.

Yep; not playing with it makes it lose ALL of its value. Because it is a toy. To be played with.

Sure. But one glance at the prices and features many of these figures have make it clear they're intended for an adult audience. Action figures like this are not meant to be played with, they're for display. Not always for kids.

Buying action figurines past the age of 13 is a depressing thought. There are probably artistic masterworks that sell for less than some crappy figurine made in a factory in China by people working on minimum wage. I mean who really cares if it's rare? So are STD's, doesn't mean you should try and collect them.

Or this. (the last "action figure" I bought) There is a very big adult market for these things. And I do open them because they hardly lose any value at all after they're opened (unless you break something) and a lot of people prefer to buy them that way because they can confirm with the seller that there are no defects or anything.

Good to see someone else realize action figures are not just for kids. There's a HUGE market out there for adults. It's great to be able to have a piece from a work of fiction or such that will give you even more enjoyment out of the source material. I really don't see it as any different than buying replica swords or props from the movies.

Exactly. I see these figures just as 3D representations of their character. You don't play with them or anything, but you can put it up on the shelf and enjoy it like you would a poster of that character. I forgot to check your second link in your first post, but I have that Ezio figure. Really great piece.

One question about that piece: are the throwing daggers/swords actually made of metal or are they plastic?
