Like, as a future job, working for the government, which classes should you choose if you want to learn about that stuff. Also, the top hackers, do they have high tech equipment or do they just use software?

Degree in Computer Science with a Computer Security major will get you a good start.

All you needs is knowledge with a system. Powerful machines or software is a bonus.

There are two ways you can do this. 1. You can use other hacker's software to hack into systems, these people are generally called "script kiddies." You don't need to understand computer systems at all since all you do is click on the buttons. Good luck trying to find usable software. This route is very unsafe because you never know how good the programmer is and you have no idea how well he can patch up your tracks or what is intentions are. 2. You can gain a full understanding of a computer system. Depending on what you want to hack, of course. For example, you can focus on web software, PHP, MySQL, etc. As soon as you fully understand their framework, you can easily find ways around it. I would recommend you study a programming language for this, since you can't fully study a program without looking at its programming code. Or You can become a hardware hacker. You weed need a full understanding of computer architecture for this one. Then you would probably start working on maybe computers, or if you want you can focus on hacking consoles for profit/non-profit reasons. MIT hackers, for example, broke the xbox' system so they could install Linux on it. As you can see, becoming a "real" hacker takes a lot of time.

Learn some programming languages like C++, C#, C, or any other. You might also want to learn an assembly language. That would get you started.

You don't learn how to hack its a method of thinking and you either have it or you don't. You can definitely learn the necessary techniques but that won't mean you would be any good.

Also if you intend to cause harm nobody will teach you, those who could would either hate you or turn you in.

Hacking is loosely defined. Hack what? Technically, you could 'hack' a soda machine.

They were both protected against some decades ago, as was the washer trick where you would put cheap washers in place of actual coins.

Yea, though I surf on the site in the shadow of malware, I fear no infection: for Tux art with me; thy AppArmor and thy SELinux they protect me.

Its too late to become a hacker now. Hackers start a a young age. You sir, are way behind.
