I'm getting a iPod touch for Christmas and I'm looking for headphones that could I could use on road trips or airplanes. I narrowed the choices down to these two:

http://beatsbydre.com/products/Products.aspx?pid=B3808

or

http://www.bose.ca/controller?url=/shop_online/headphones/noise_cancelling_headphones/quietcomfort_15/index.jsp

I work at Best Buy so I get a good discount on the headphones. On the Dr Dre headphones I'd be getting them for about $210 and the Bose ones I'd be getting for about $250. Any input is appreciated.

You shouldn't waste your money on either of those. Bose and Beats are both terribly overpriced and overrated.

I agree.

Get the Sennheiser HD 202's. They are absolutely amazing. Barely any sound comes in, and no noise leakage either. Amazing headphones, especially for the price. Great company too.

Don't think about Beats or Bose. Waaay to expensive for the little you get.

Neither of them are really that good. The Beats probably sound better, but they're just too overpriced to justify them

For portable headphones check out Shure SE530s( just ordered them), Audio Technica ES7( currently have them), UE Triple Fi 10 Pro( I think these are 100 bucks on Amazon)

What exactly do you mean by portable headphones? Like in-ear ones or over the top or does portable mean both?

I was referring to both. For example, the Shures, and the UEs go in ear, but the ES7s have a thin headband, and the cups fold up. They're also pretty easy to power, so iPod's and such would get better sound quality out of them, than say Sennheisser HD650s would

Things not to buy at all
Bose anything: You're paying for the brand, not for the product. They would be fantastic - If they were about $100 cheaper, for their headphones. Much better headphones exist at much lower prices.

Skullcandy: Think of taking the cheapest crap you can find, putting on an ugly skull logo, painting it in tacky colors that would appeal to children

+1 , i have had these for about 2 weeks now after choosing them over the competition. the sound is godlike, although the 10 foot cable pretty much means you wont be using them on the go.

I love the idea that buying expensive head phones will make poorly compressed MP3s magically sound good.

No. For the love of all that is good and holy, no.

For that money I'd recommend a pair of Sleek Audio SA6's, probably the best for-the-money IEMs on the market (especially if you don't have an amp). That said, you would probably be better going with something cheaper like the Sleek Audio SA1's (IEMs, ~$80), Koss Portapros (on-ear, ~$50) or Grado SR-60's (over-ear, ~$70).

this is assuming that he is listening to poorly compressed mp3's. v0 sounds great on my denon's and i actually cant even tell the difference between it and flac. because after god knows how many blind tests on head-fi its pretty much been concluded that you cant hear the difference past v0 , arguably even v2. and the people who say FLAC sounds better are just saying it. if you dont believe, take a blind test between v0 or 320 and flac and see what happens.

I can ABX lossless and V2 very, very easily. I never encode any lower than V0. The general consensus is that it's certainly possible to discern a difference between V0 and lossless..but you need some really nice sound equipment or just amazing ears.

Not that I even use MP3. I encode to (aoTuV) Vorbis -q8 for my D2+ (everything on my computer, I keep as lossless.)

Oh, and I own the ATH-ES7s, which DivergeUnify mentioned above. Excellent headphones for the price. (~$100.) Highly recommended.
