The Shining is still the only movie that has actually scared me. I do love me some horror films though.
The Audition is the only one but that's psychological and Japanese. The Exorcist I guess. Can't get into horror movies because I would rather laugh than feel tense just because a really loud sound will pop out of nowhere. That's the only real scare mechanism there is nowadays aside from the music.
I honestly thought The Ring was a pretty scary movie (at the time anyways - haven't seen it in a long time). It doesn't have these constant jumpy parts, or bloody zombies/monsters - instead it's a good story driven film that's moody and just eerie. I actually found the whole look of the movie itself pretty depressing (in a good way). It's got this sad tone to it all.
"The Descent" - Claustrophobia for days.
"House of 1000 Corpses" - The scene where Walton Goggins buys it still startles me even though I know it's coming. The timing of the camera pull-back to the gunshot is amazing. Some folks need killin'... That's The Way.
"Dust Devil: The Final Cut" - Pure genius.
"Gothic" - Ken Russell gets spooky.
"High Tension" - The French manage to do something well.
"The Hills Have Eyes (ReMake)" - More to the "gross" side, but a good one.
"The House on Haunted Hill (ReMake)" - Spooky ol' House, AIN'T IT?
"ReAnimator" - Again, more to the gross side, but still... Perfection ala Jeffrey Combs.
"From Beyond" - See Above.
"Colour out of the Darkness" - Fine Italian take on Lovecraft's "Colour out of Space" with genuinely creepy moments.
"In the Mouth of Madness" - Carpenter's love letter to HP Lovecraft.
"Lair of the White Worm" - Ken Russell again, this time doing a little-known Bram Stoker novel.
"The Last Horror Movie" - Home-spun wisdom from a serial killer. The real horror is, he's RIGHT most of the time...
"Kairo" - Woof, this one is creeeeeeepy...
"The Signal" - Who's goin' crazy? I'm goin' crazy...
"Splinter" - Just watch it.
"Soft For Digging" - There are only two or three words spoken in the entire film. That's talent.
"Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original)" - Tobe Hooper is still the King.
"Wrong Turn" - Stan Winston's effects are disturbing.
"1408" - A rare ghost film that will un-nerve most viewers.
"The Mist" - Just for the brave ending. You don't often see directors or Hollywood allowing a downer ending like this.
Enjoy.
