The thought of Gravity and what happens is TERRIFYING. Being lost in space floating away into nothingness....bro. That scares me. It is just insanely lonely, cold, quiet and dark.
Being stranded on Mars? Doesn't sound bad at all. At least I am on solid ground At least I have a shelter, decent food/water supply. I have a bunch of toys to play with.
I enjoyed The Martian but I never really felt he was in tons of danger. Sure a thing or two happens in the movie but they are not as scary as flying off into space forever.
Gravity by far since your lonely in Space and who knows what's truly out there and that's scary to think about it when your not on solid ground. The Martian was good indeed but it was just Cast Away being on another planet.
I enjoyed The Martian more, but for the humor, not necessarily what you are asking about. I suppose if I would have to say, which is the better survival movie, I guess it would be Gravity, but the better movie overall would be The Martian.
Both were overrated, but at least The Martian had more body to it. Gravity was a neat but terrifying sensual experience, but not really much of a movie.
For the record, I thought Interstellar was better than either.
The difference between Gravity and The Martian is in Gravity you actually feel like the character is in peril and danger for most of the time.
The Martian just did not have any of that. I never once felt like Matt Damon's character was in danger or faced any legitimate obstacle that truly challenged him. He was after all a highly experienced engineer with a recourse of manuals to learn off of. and a ready supply of tools and equipment to allow him to face anything. The film felt like it chose an optimistic character of this caliber not to go through troubles, but to showcase a NASA vision.
So with that said, I'll say Gravity does a far better job presenting a survivalist journey whereas The Martian is a carousel of progress kind of display rather than a movie about survival.
Martian is better, Damon is using all his knowledge and materials available to fight for his survival. In Gravity, bullock is basically running through a minefield blindfolded, and by dumb luck, escapes
@joehult: I don't agree. I think The Martian's comedic elements, which I liked, ultimately detracted from any real "sense" of danger. I never thought Matt Damon was in any serious danger, heck it almost seems as if he could have survived for a couple more movies. In Gravity, there is an almost omnipresent sense of danger, with random objects coming at Sandra Bullock, seemingly every few minutes. George Clooney's character sacrificing himself to save Sandra Bullock is tragic and only serves to increase the tension and possible disastrous outcomes.
2 hours of sandra bullock flailing around in space... yawn. If you wanna see the best space survival movie of all time you just need to watch the last like 20 minutes of total recall.
Really? I thought they are the opposite. The Martian was boring compared to Gravity. There are a lot more seat of your pants moment in Gravity than The Martian. I mean it's "shit constantly exploding and flying in your face" vs "man slowly starving to death".

Since people are going to bring up Interstellar, I've mixed views, I really like it the more I watch it, as far as Matt Damon's role goes, I loved his surprise Interstellar cameo and the more I watched it, I really liked his role in Interstellar more than his role in The Martian. That was such a twisted and intense part.

I'm interested to know what was they left out. From reading the wiki page it sounded like they capture most of the major plot points (although the wiki article might have been written in respect to the movie).
