I use to smoke. I smoked for about 5 monthes so maybe 100 cigs. in my whole life. I just hope my lungs recover from the damages i caused, i'm 20 now by the way going to be 21 soon. I don't really drink much anymore ever since i signed up for the gym. So which do you think is worse for you drinking or smoking? Drinking makes your liver work over time and doesn't allow your liver to break down what it needs to when it comes to nutrition, drinking lowers testosterone and makes you infertile. Alcohol goes into your blood and is sent to every tissue and organ it's like a poison. I won't even mention the effects of alcohol on behavior (drinking and driving, fights, unprotected sex, etc.) Smoking on the other hand increases your risk of heart disease and lung cancer. It contains over 60 chemicals in which 3 are proven poisonous. Alot also has to do with genetics....i know people who lived to 85 who smoked all their lives never been to the hospital. So which is worse?

Well, speaking strictly from a nutrition point of view, alcohol has some positive effects on the human body while cigarettes are entirely negative. I smoke rarely but I drink fairly often.

Now if you get drunk every single time you have a lot of beers or whatever, that's not going to have a positive effect on you, but drinking a glass of wine or having a beer or two a day can actually be beneficial, not to mention stress relieving.

if you only smoked for 5 months i don't think there would be any noticeable damage after you stopped.

anyways, i think it depends how much of either you are doing.

i am led to believe that smoking less than half a pack of cigarettes a day and you will be fine. i say this because last semester in my ksu 1101 class (class all freshman at my college have to take), we had to take a personal assessment survey thing, and one of the questions was "do you smoke more than half a pack of cigarettes per day?" i think if smoking less than half a pack was really that bad for you, they would have just asked "do you smoke cigarettes?" or "do you smoke at least 3 cigarettes per day?" or something like that.

And I know a man who lived to be 102 who drank every night. The point is that every body is different, we are all of a certain susceptibility to drug-induced disease based on a deluge of factors. The smart idea is to not do both.

Well, they are both bad. Most smoking damage is reversible, given time. Though, liver problems can't. Pick your poison I suppose.

And everything in moderation.

everything pretty much depends on genetics. You can not smoke a day in your life and get lung cancer. Like i said i know people who lived to 85 who smoked heavily from a young age, they never had surgery. It's about genetics, kind of like...you know the wrestler Brock Lesnar? he's this super buff strong guy. An ordinary person who goes to the gym everyday, eats very well, etc. is still not going to look like him if he doesn't have the genetics.

If you smoke 4 packs a day and drink a couple beers...probably smoking.

If you drink a bottle of booze a day and only smoke 3 cigarettes...probably booze.

As an old teacher said, "everything in moderation".

Abstinence would be best in this case.

This is exactly the correct answer. Drinking to excess is bad, drinking casually can be good. Smoking is only bad, and even being around someone who is smoking is unhealthy.

Drinking would be worse, as your liver goes through sheer hell trying to process the alcohol out of your body.

Cirrhosis is irreversible, and liver transplants are exceedingly expensive.

Some website I found says tobacco causes about fives times more deaths annually than alcohol:

http://drugwarfacts.org/

I can't link to the exact article saying that, because GameSpot's editor is a ****ing piece of ****. Don't know how they figured that, but I'm not turning this into a research project. Alcohol in small quantities may be good for you; cigarettes are not. Therefore, smoking is worse than drinking.

Oh here we go, here's another version of that chart. Will GameSpot let me link to it?

http://skeptically.org/recdrugs/id10.html

Yes. Gee, thanks. According to that, tobacco is number one, and being a fatass is number two. Alcohol's a distant third.

Here's another one that puts smoking about four times higher than drinking:

They're both equally bad and both have the potential to ruin lives. I don't drink or smoke so maybe I'm not qualified to say. But my Grandad died from lung cancer caused by smoking when he was younger so I know the effect it can have. Drink though seems to cause more trouble through drunken behaviour. Binge drinking is on the rise and the majority of driving fatalities are caused by drink driving. So while I can't understand why anyone would start either, it's your body, so if you want to destroy it internally go ahead.

Depends what you're smoking.

Cigarettes vs Alcohol, Alcohol is worse for you.

Btw, 100 cigs in 5 months isn't going to do anything. There are people who smoke that in one month all year long for decades and never get lung cancer.

well nothing done in moderation is really THAT bad for you. (excluding heroine / crack) So, I would say a heavy alcoholic would be worse off then somebody who smoked 2-4 packs a day.

That's why I said EXCLUDING alcoholics. If you smoke a couple cigarettes every day it will do way worse for you than a glass of wine or something every day, which can actually be beneficial to your health, inhaling smoke is never good for your health. If it's between drinking a bottle of vodka every day or smoking a couple packs, there's no better or worse, that person is just an idiot for doing it and needs help asap.

I know you said excluding, I'm assuming the OP was talking about excessive amounts of each because neither are that bad in moderation.

I think smoking is worse, but drinking is as bad as well if you have too much. But smoking causes the worse damage to your body long term, and alcohol only if it is in excess.

If I drink, and I rarely do. I drink MAYBE two glasses of beer at the very most. I don't see the good side of losing all inhibitions, throwing up, and possibly ruining your life and being unable to remember it.

Smoking, by far. Unless you binge drink all the time, a little alcohol is beneficial for your body - doubly so if you're drinking a nice dark beer or red wine.

But the question is which is worse for your body. Responsible drinking helps health. Which means it has positives. Smoking is nothing but a negative. Plus, unless one is an alcoholic......it's easy to stop drinking. Not true for smoking.

True, but id say that both have long term effects but drinking also can have huge short term effects as well, and therefore at least can be worse to your health.

Indeed, that's why I say either do neither or keep them at moderation. Personally, I do not drink even in moderation simply because I do not like the taste. Alcohol in moderation can be a good thing however. As far as smoking, I do so in moderation and have not become addicted. To give you an idea, I recently went 3 months without smoking any form of tobacco. Before that I went about 6 months. However, I have had several bowls of pipe tobacco and a few hookahs the past few weeks. I'll probably have a cigar later this evening. If it ever begins to control me as opposed to me controlling it, I'll quit completely. Until then, I shall continue studying Greek on my back porch with pipe in hand. :P

[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"]But the question is which is worse for your body. Responsible drinking helps health. Which means it has positives. Smoking is nothing but a negative. Plus, unless one is an alcoholic......it's easy to stop drinking. Not true for smoking.mindstorm

Not even wine? Doesn't that come with the territory?:P That's fine that you enjoy a smoke......but it's not doing wonders for your health.

I think both aren't good for your body. Smoking is definitely worse though, unless you drink to excess, then I think they're equally bad. Which do you want to lose? YOur lungs or your liver?
