(CNN) – The White House released President Obama's original birth certificate Wednesday.

The surprise release follows recent and sustained remarks by businessman Donald Trump, among others, that raised doubts as to whether the president was born in the United States.

In an interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper Monday, Trump repeated his doubts and said he had been told the certificate was "missing."

A new CNN investigation revealed earlier this week what most analysts have been saying since the "birther" controversy erupted during the 2008 presidential campaign: Obama was born in Hawaii on August 4, 1961.

While the president has made light of the controversy, the question remained political red meat for some of his critics. A recent CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll showed that nearly 75% of Americans believe Obama was definitely or probably born in the United States. More than four in 10 Republicans, however, believe he probably or definitely was not born in America.

The U.S. Constitution says only "natural born" citizens can become president - a vague clause that some members of the birther movement contend disqualifies Obama because, they insist, he was born outside the United States.

Skeptics contend, among other things, that Obama was born in his father's home country of Kenya.

Ridiculous story that was never deserving of the ampunt of hype it received in the first place. I heared yesterday on the radio that not only is Obama's proof of birth, legally admissable in court, in a binder in Hawaii where everyone's birth records are kept, but that the only person to request access to the binder in the past month was an AP reporter. Apparently those investigators that Trump sent down there didn't have the sense to go to the office of records, wonder why?

I find it a little funny that all the people that for the past year had been shouting "he already released his birth certificate" now have egg on their faces. :)

Actually, for all intents and purposes, he did. Hawaii, for official proceedings, uses the certificate of live birth. Furthermore, anyone who requests a birth certificate in Hawaii gets the certificate of live birth, not the birth certificate. This has been a pointless story all along

I can't be the only one here who wouldn't give a damn if it turned out the birther's were right.

I'm also sure that this one quiet the skeptics.

Actually, I was kinda hoping this would go on at least through the next election. Only Republicans tend to believe birther stories, and even then not all of them. The more a Republican candidate focuses on the birther issue the more they polarize their constituents and drive away moderate voters.

I agree with you that hopefully this puts an end to the debate......... BUT............. I can't say that I'd be ok with someone being president who is legally not allowed to hold that office, regardless of whether or not I share their ideology.

It's absurd that this got any coverage to begin with. Don't you think that sometime during the election, SOMEONE would have found out about this? And even if it WERE true, it would look bad on the country as a whole than it would Obama. Finally it can be put to rest, and hopefully it'll be enough for Trump to just stop talking.

So, the certificate of live birth that EVERY Hawaiian receives when asked for a copy of the birth cerrtificate is not basically the same? Actually it is. BTW.....that document he released IS a certificate of live birth. The one he released three years ago WAS basically his birth certificate, if Hawaii uses them for all official proceedings.

Now those "birther" fools have nothing to hide behind. They should just come out and admit they've been racist against the President this whole time.

No I wasn't, but it's clear that he did 3 years ago. If the Hawaiian government used the birth certificate for anything official (Which they don't), I may have just wanted to see the birth certificate, just to shut the birthers up. But....they use the certificate of live birth for their official proceedings. That's what Obama got, that's how he proved he was an American citizen to be on the ballot. The birth certificate would not hold up in any Hawaiian government proceeding.

Probably not, there will always be people who believe in certain things, even when presented with evidence that contradicts that belief.

Obama did issue his birth certificate. It was the official copy that you get when you request a birth certificate in Hawaii. But I guess details aren't really important when you're trying to shoehorn a point.

I personally don't know anyone that is supporting Trump for the presidency. That being said, I'm thinking that I'm not alone in appreciating some of the things he's saying. I believe that Trump has no intention of actually running for president, so he's having fun and saying a lot of things that real politicians wouldn't say. "Stop letting China push us around" and things like that.

No, for all intents and purposes it is his birth certificate. It holds up in any court and any legal challenge as a birth certificate. When you request your birth certificate from Hawaii that is what you get. When you request your birth certificate from the state of Kentucky you get a document mush like that one. No one has "egg on their faces" because legall, yes, it is a birth certificate.

[QUOTE="SaintLeonidas"]...now Trump is trying to question Obama's grades, and how well he actually did at Harvard. The guy is such a joke, I mean really, anyone who would even consider supporting the clown needs to get their heads checked.Omni-Slash
you mean like the media did with GW's grades before?... don't get me wrong...trump is an idiot and I have no desire to support him...but the faux outrage is a little much....

Media questioning grades=/= Trump blabbering on about it, and if the media did they'd receive the same outrage...just wait until Fox brings it up...but still I can actually understand why people would question Bush's intelligence

I find it a little funny that all the people that for the past year had been shouting "he already released his birth certificate" now have egg on their faces. :)

I love your spin:lol:. Forget the galring issue that the people who doubted him have more egg on their faces.

Obama did issue his birth certificate. It was the official copy that you get when you request a birth certificate in Hawaii. But I guess details aren't really important when you're trying to shoehorn a point.

See what I mean surreal?

People drink different flavors of kool aid. I guess we know yours.

It's even funnier that people cared. If he wasn't born here, it shouldn't matter.
