[QUOTE="GreySeal9"]

An apple .vs. a baseball bat?! That is one of the silliest analogies I've ever heard.

If both documents have the same legal weight as far as proving citizenship, the differences between them don't matter.

They are both birth certificates and one is simply more detailed. If you ask for a birth certificate in Hawaii, you get the short term. The same is true in Arizona.

The people who wanted this conspiracy to be true or believed it are the only ones with egg on their face.

Necrifer

I liked his analogy!

Well, you must like it for comedic reasons because it doesn't make sense.

The short form and long form are both birth certificates. They are just different versions so to say.

A baseball bat and apple have nothing in common.

[QUOTE="00-Riddick-00"]Birth certificate aside.. Don't both parents have to be American citizens? And if I recall.. His father never was..DroidPhysX

No. If you're born in the U.S. you're instantly a citizen. That's why states want to challenge the 14th amendment for 'anchor babies'

As long as one of their parents is an american citizen that shouldn't matter.

It's not like there was a legitimate reason to believe that he wasn't born in the US when the issue first came up. The issue was fabricated and his race might very well be a reason for that. To think otherwise is just plain naive.GreySeal9

I don't think Obama's race was the reason for that necessarily, but rather his "exoticness". Race (maybe) combined with his name, his ancestry, his history (such as spending a period of his childhood outside the United States). So I won't say racism was behind the Birther movement, but I think xenophobia definately was.

Which is an important semantic difference in some states, but there was no way to know in Hawaii since they wouldn't bother telling anyone. In my state, it's a Certificate of Live Birth, and can be either a short form or a long form. In some states, a Certificate of Live Birth is the short form while the Birth Certificate is the long form. Stop assuming.MAILER_DAEMON

I still don't see why "some states" matters so much beyond some people getting confused because they don't realize that different states have different procedures. The President was born in Hawaii, so what matters is Hawaii's prodecures and those were discussed ad naseum on the news.

Anybody whose motive for "questioning" is simply as innocent as getting mixed up on this semantic detail would probably be reassured by the birth announcement in the paper or when the Health Director confirmed that the long for in fact existed.

Those who were not that satisfied with those two things were conspiracy theorists (not simply 'questioners') because to doubt the Health Director would be to accuse of her of being "in on it".

In one move Obama has destroyed the trump campaign and a huge blow to republicans.

My question though is whether or not this was delayed so long to be used as a political tactic by the Obama administration

I suppose it's possible, though I would think more likely they simply considered it a non-issue.

Ehh, Trump isn't in the race. Sure he's making a lot of noise now, but I highly doubt he's ever had any intention of seriously running when it comes down to it.

Admittedly an old poll, but one from PPP in February found that 51% of Republican primary voters don't believe Obama was born in the US, while an addition 21% weren't sure. 28% believed he was.

Now you can argue that Republican primary voters aren't necessarily representative of the Republican party as a whole, but this poll and others like it certainly suggest a strong birther presence in the Republican party.

[QUOTE="MAILER_DAEMON"][QUOTE="-Sun_Tzu-"] Bernanke isn't a Keynesian as much as he is a monetarist in the same vein as Milton Friedman. And how would deflation inspire spending as of now?-Sun_Tzu-

The rising gas and food prices make it harder for people to justify big expenditures that supposedly drive this economy. Deflation would increase the value of the dollar (which is one of many reasons the price of oil has skyrocketed), give it greater buying power, and allow people to spend more. People buy less because they simply can't buy as much of everything, and grocery stores are now selling smaller amounts of products at the same price as before, rather than increasing the price on things. It's one of those simple ideas that people in power are deathly afraid of because of the massive deflation of the Depression.

But if there is deflation, what incentive would people have to spend today if prices are going to lower tomorrow? What incentive do people have to invest when they can just sit on their money as it becomes more and more valuable? And deflation increases the burden of debt, meaning that debtors can't spend as much.

Deflation is never good for the economy, but disinflation can be.

I can't be the only one here who wouldn't give a damn if it turned out the birther's were right.

I'm also sure that this one quiet the skeptics.

They couldn't have done this like 2 years ago?

I guess they just wanted to make a lot of people look bad. Politics sucks.

not politics. Politicians... Or as it would be said... Hate the players, not the game. Unless the game is broken.

Why not just do this earlier? Not sure why Obama let that nonsense continue for so long.

i would say, politics, it was a great card to not only rally his base but to radicalize part of the other ends base. this outstanding not only kept his base in check but it also made the other side look worse to independents.

Watch this do nothing to shut the birthers up. They're not intelligent people who make informed decisions. They'll probably just say it's a government conspiracy now or some dumb crap or just refuse to admit that he showed his birth certificate like they have been for years.
