And what is your favorite work by each?

1. Kazuo Ishiguro-My favorite novel from him is Never Let Me Go, which is my favorite novel ever. The Remains of the Day is also a masterpiece. I like Ishiguro because of his mature take on emotion and his excellent use of memory and unreliable narrators.

2. Stephen King-My favorite novel (or rather novella) from him is Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption. I love the tastefully folksy voice in his novels and he writes children extremely well. His endings can be questionable at times, but he walks a great line between being literary and fun.

3. Philip Pullman-My novel work of his is the His Dark Materials trilogy and I probably like The Subtle Knife the best out of the three of them. Philip Pullman's fantasy world is exotic, has a realistic texture to it, and has more shades of grey to it than other fantasy worlds. Plus his prose is beautifully elegant and lush.

Dean Koontz is my least favorite author. Dude is a hack.

Nobody can write science fiction like H.G. Wells. The Time Machine and The Island of Doctor Moreau are the only books to ever leave me with an uneasy feeling in my stomach. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote fantastic mystery and created one of the most beloved characters of all time. Homer wrote The Iliad, which is my favourite book. So I guess these are my choices at the moment.

I feel like enumerating the reasons why Dean Koontz is a hack.

1. His books are full of mind-numblingly purple prose. Some of his similes are truly cringeworthy. I remember him comparing a hairy spider to the taliban. And for the love of God, Dean, please put the Thesaurus away. You're using it wrong. And no, purple prose doesn't make you look smart or poetic. It makes you look like a person that can't write.

2. His protagonists are always flaw free goody two-shoes kind of characters. That alone makes Dean's work unbearable. The perfection of some of the women in Koontz's work made me roll my eyes so hard. I can't stand when authors are sentimental about women and children.

3. His books have rightwing preaching in them. I don't want hear that dumb sh!t when I'm reading for pleasure.

4. Dean always has his character exchange witty (well atleast he think its witty) banter. Even in the most horrifying situations his characters banter with eachother, which makes them come off like crazy people IMO.

5. Dean has a dog fetish that I thought was innocent at first. Until I found out that he has heroic dogs in the majority of his books that is.

6. His plots are extremely dumb and cheesy but they take themselves seriously enough that it doesn't even manage to be funny or endearing.

7. One of his books is filled with the most stereotypical Asian people ever.

Okay. I'll stop now.

Faulkner, Martin and Heller. HM: Tolkien, King, Grahame-Smith, Fitzgerald, and of course, Salinger. Heller gets on there, purely because Catch-22 is one of my favorite novels, even though the rest of his stuff is fairly "meh."
