I don't hate it but I don't see the fuss in it. Tbh, what IS anime?? Is it some American thing? Cause I live in Britain and it doesn't seem to be happening here...

Like on Deviantart people are chatting on about Naruto, or putting loads of weird Japenese words in their comments. What IS that?! It's confusing...

Anyone? Am I the ONLY one on Gamespot/GameFAQS that HATES anime? All forms of anime?

I cannot STAND it.

darkSIDEechoes

you know, I really dont get anime and why people are so obsessed with the whole style of cartoon

1. Why cant they just be labeled cartoons?

2. Why is that dumb style of making the eyes and hair too extreme quallify obsession?

3. Why?

I mean, if you like that style thats cool i guess. But I dont understand how that drawing style can somehow be considered a hobby. I mean if you like cartoons, whatever. but one specific drawing style is a little strange to me

1. Because the connotation of "cartoon" is misleading. It implies that something is comic(al), which is why things that aren't even animated (real-life/stop motion animation) can be considered "cartoons" in certain cases. Which isn't the case with anime. Correct terminology would also mean that "animated" is more correct and more neutral. Though of course some of animes actually are cartoons. There is also the fact that even when the term cartoon is used liberally, it falls into two catergories i. Children's animation ii. Animation intended to interesting precisley because it is animated and yet still aimed at an adult audiences (which again, plays on peoples perceptions of what a "cartoon" is). There is no term to describe something that is animated but it's animation is neither comical or intended to have a reverse effect of being comical/satirical. Animation I think is a term no one would have issue with because it has a very neutral meaning. "Cartoon" is not only not neutral, but flat out misleading.

Before you point out that Japanese people themselves make the same mistake of labelling anime as cartoons when they speak English, you should realise they are making the same overarching generalisations made above without realising the deeper connotations of what a cartoon really is.

2. It's not one style, it's one overarching style and every and any general rule you see will be broken by certain artists within that style of animation. Just watch anime from back in the 80's which resemble western animation a lot (for even older examples see some of Tezuka's stuff). Even in modern anime there is variance away from this norm to greater or lesser degrees.

3. People can like 1 genre of music or people may only like one type of game. Do we say these have no hobby in music or gaming? Well, I don't, but you do...apparently...

1. Because it's from Japan, and has it's own st-yle usually consistent for Japanese animation. Mostly it's a differential thing, like calling Gantz a cartoon just the same as Hey! Arnold would be pretty bad.

2. It's just an art st-yle usually meant to exaggerate Asian qualities. Not much more than that. The eyes and hair are pretty much the key points to differentiating the characters in an anime, as a st-yle the general anime character facial structure looks the same. Why do all American cartoons have the same st-yle of lack of detail? Because it's a choice of st-yle.

3. It's a unique form of entertainment. Most of the time the stories are wholly original and tend to be more interesting as a whole with their more fantastic situations.

I have a question, why is it people dislike an entire form of entertainment just because they dislike Naruto/DBZ?

I find it strange that you took offense to what I was saying. but then again this is gamespot, everyone has a hot head about everything.

anyway. the point i was trying to make is for example

if you like movies, you may only like romantic comedies, or action etc

if you like music, you may like metal or jazz or rock etc

if you like "animation", you may like serious ones, or funny ones

So, I like the movie 300... but I dont go out of my way to find movies that have a similar look to 300. Do you see what im saying? before you respond, take a chill pill.

I think it rediculous to say you love or hate anime.. Its just another form of entertainment.. It would be as rediculous as saying I hate all live action movies.. Base it upon the content.. I am not fond of alot of anime but I absolute love Akira and Berserk.. Case and point.

1: Because cartoons are basically the american stereotype for them.. They are childish pieces of work.. When Anime they can be but alot of them are not.. Some are quite graphic and or have numerous philosophically deep points that ar emade.

2: Alot of animes don't do the hair what so ever, so your point fails due to logicall fallacies.

3: Why? Because alot of animes make depictions that really can't be accurately done yet with live action even at where special effects are at.

If it weren't for anime we would not see movies like Matrix, Kill Bill Part 1, etc etc..

anyway. the point i was trying to make is for example

if you like movies, you may only like romantic comedies, or action etc

if you like music, you may like metal or jazz or rock etc

if you like "animation", you may like serious ones, or funny ones

H8sMikeMoore

There's no hot headnessess there, you read the last line wrong...it's more like "why do I have to state the obvious?" type of exasperation.

You just made a mistake right there. You are assuming that anime is a genre...it's not. It's a medium.

Just look at what you said just now:

"if you like movies, you may only like romantic comedies, or action etc"

that could just as easily be

"if you like anime, you may only like romantic comedies or action etc"

This is why I have a major contention with asking someone if they like anime or not. It's like asking if people like scripted-action tv (by which I mean, real life acted TV that is scripted, not realitytv/news/documentaries, but intended to entertain rather than inform). Actually, let's make it fairer, since "anime" is normally only including Japanese produced animation...let's limit it to US scripted action TV vs. anime...maybe that's a bit fairer. When you look at it that way you may be able to see how narrow your perception of what anime is. Sure enough there is a lot of stuff that looks all the same because that is the majority of what is popular with western anime fans, but then that generalisation is like assumuing all there is in the former category is the cut and dried breed of TV that FX runs (Lost, 24, Prison Break), is that a fair representation of that category to you? Does that term US-TV only mean those types shows? If you wanted you could consider Japanese anime and US scripted TV as genres within a medium, and romance/comedy as sub genres, in either case it's just faffing around with termininology, my point is that your view of anime is similar to the one I presented above of US TV.

You may not go out of your way to look movies that look similar to 300, but maybe you would to find others that were similarly action oriented/artistically put together? Or even on a more basic level, you might go out and track down Sin City since it has the same director (I believe) or you might look for a film starring a familiar actor in a role that isn't too dissimilar.

edit: in bold ^^

Those a long serialisations...what do you expect? As a rule of thumb. Take the number of episodes a series has and expect the quality to dilute for each episode. It's also worth pointing out that both of those are quite old now. Animation does move on pretty damn quickly (more evident with feature films than series). It's highly unlikley those productions would have had the budget or shortness to have the attention lavished on them something like GiTS.

It's interesting though, that this debate on animation is even taking place. No one debates western animation in the same way and I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that western animation fields are far more narrow and normally limited to comedy; just look at all the Pixar/Dreamworks productions, nearly all comedy (and tbh those are the only ones that are popular/broad enough to have anyone scrutinise the art quality).

Why is it when someone takes an interest in German or English or Russian or Chinese culture it's ok, but when someone likes something from Japan they are idiots who can't tell their feet from their hands?

obsession =/= interest.

markbeici's comment sounded like he was defending anime...so why would an anime crazed person have an issue with him?

I'm not a fan of Inuyasha, but I can safely say these two anime very well done, in terms of their quality of animation.

I have to disagree, the animation is jerky and inconsistant and the battles do that annoying thing where they apparently move so fast you cant even see the actual movements most of the time. Also when a character does an over the top yelling charge for some reason behind him are random lights surging past him, apparently showing how fast he is moving:roll: Plus Inuyasha is an annoying show with characters I want to smack and very repetitive episodes.

I'm just saying it's stupid to insult people who fall into MTV fads when there are people who are completely crazy about anime.

What about A Scanner Darkly and Renaissance? Both very good animation movies that are not comedies and they experiment with animation. Thats the stuff i wanna see, I think those are much more creative animation wise than Anime.

Does Sin City count as an animation movie? The whole thing was pretty much all animated with CGI.

Pearl_of_Egypt

A derogatory slang used towards those that have an interest in Japanese culture.

uh no, it's a term used towards those who are completely obsessed by it to the point of being downright annoying.

It's more often than not used to tell people off that like anime, with the assumption being that we are obsessed with Japanese culture. Your right interest =/= obsession, therefore why is it someone with an interest in Japanese culture has his own derogatory slang?

Dispite the large amounts of CGI, it's got live actors aswell. Maybe something along the lines of Who Framed Roger Rabbit? :P

Aren't both of those exceptions to the rule though? As a general rule anime is more broad, even just two genres (comedy/action) is still broader than just one.

And likewise there are bound to be exceptions within Japanese animation (something like Noiseman comes to mind when thinking of experimental anime (I hated it tbh, but it's worth a look)).

And to answer the thread question. I am not saying that hating anime or not is an impossible or ludicrous assertion, but it is means far more to say yes or no to that question than people may realise since the breadth of anime much wider than people may first think. I don't like having to choose yes or no, but yes at least implies I like some anime so it's the option I'm going to go with.

A scanner darkly has live actors, they just draw over them and its still considered animation. Rotoscoping has been used for years, which is what a scanner darkly used. I think Sin City kinda counts.
