I think it is laughable that people think that keeping the drinking age 21 is going to deter anyone from consuming alcohol. In my opinion, it would be much safer for minors to learn how to consume alcohol in a safe environment with their parents around, not in a dorm with a bunch of horny, immature, drunk kids.

If I could make the laws for the US, it would be:

  • You have to be 18 to be able to buy alcoholic beverages
  • You can consume alcohol at the age of 13 as long as you are with a parent/guardian
  • You can consume alcohol at the age of 13 in restaurants as long as you are with a legal guardian
  • You can consume any alcohol you want at the age of 18

Now, I know that alcohol can cause problems when consumed unresponsibly, but that is why you can learn how to consume alcohol responsibly with your parents are guardians when you are still in school.

I'm 18 btw.

helium_flash

If your parents want to let you consume alcohol when you're 15, then they'll let you consume alcohol when you're 15. I know plenty of people whose parents let them drink before they were old enough to buy alcoholic beverages.

If I can die for country at 18 I should be able to have a beer. web966

If I can die for my country at age 18, I should be able to run for president. :|

More kids becoming alcoholics at a younger age? More drunk driving accidents? More kids dying?

Yah, let's lower it. :|

One can definitely make a good argument for lowering it to 18 or 19, but I think that allowing 13 year old kids to drink legally is wrong.

Imo, it doesn't really matter what the drinking age is. People under the age limit are always going to find a way to get their hands on alcohol.

[QUOTE="Napster06"]

13 is too young, and even with a 25 year old, not necessarily the latter is much more matured than anyone else.

And honestly, why the rush to drink? No doubt wine has some good health related plus points, but beer? I don't see a need to introduce alcohol into the bodies of minors unneccessarily.

helium_flash

That's the problem. Kids rush to drink, and that is because alcohol has been refused to them for so long.

Uh...no. It's because alcohol gets them high.

And...? It's not like the cops follow your mom home and peep through the windows to make sure that she's not giving you beer.

You bring up the argument that if drinking were legal at 17, your parents could teach you how to drink responsibly. Well, they can do that NOW. Who's stopping them?

It should be: 18 for beer/wine/lower content alcohol, and 21 for hard liquor like whiskey/vodka/etc.

And please tell me HOW the state is stopping your parents from letting you drink booze when you're 17. When parents buy booze, the law enforcement officers don't freaking follow them home to make sure that they're not serving to minors. Unless your parents get you ****faced, and then you go out in public and get arrested, and you tell the cops that it was your parents who gave you the booze, how the **** is anyone gonna know?

You dont make sense. Your answer to the solution is don't get caught. Parents should allow their children to drink with them if they want, and it should be legal.

Or should be punish people who do drink responsibly, yet unfortunately still get caught?

Once again, HOW are you gonna get caught? If you're talking about drinking "responsibly", that means drinking in moderation in the presence of people who are sober.

If you're getting drunk, you're NOT drinking responsibly.

Seriously, can you give me ONE plausible scenario in which your parents could get caught giving you two beers with dinner?

Lowering the drinking age to 18 would be one monumental mistake - I would say raise it to 25, but 21 is good enough.

Well no one really pays attention to these sort of laws anyway so it might as well be 18 in the US instead of 21. Here in England it's 16 with parents in public, and 18 for anything - we have a lot of binge drinking, but we also have similer amounts of underage binge drinking so I guess it doesn't matter.

The drinking age is 18 where I live so I have no complaints. But I never understood that law. You're old enough to go to war, but you're too young to drink/buy drinks?

I don't think that would make any difference. If it went down to 18, people under that age are still gonna break the law. Even if drinking was illegal, people will be still finding ways to drink just the same as people find ways to get pot or any other illegal substances.

If it were up to me it'd be like this... At the age of 5 a child can consume alcoholic beverages as long as they are supervised by a mature adult (26+) and their BAL stays below 0.3. At the age of 13 the legal BAL of kid is raised to 0.6 if supervised by a mature adult (26+) plus they can consume alcoholic beverages if supervised by a young adult (21+) and their BAL stays below 0.3. I think if people had been drinking since they were kids it wouldn't be such a big deal, they'd know how to hold it, when to stop and we wouldn't have so many people ODing. PS: I just pulled the blood alcohol levels out of my ass. The only thing I know is that 0.8 is the legal limit for everyone or something like that. I forgot, it's whatever they told me in driver's ed.

I think it should stay the same, I'm younger than 21 (I'm 14) because we cannot afford more alcoholics since Im growing up around them I know what alcohol could do to you dont control you drinking. It affects your personal life, emotionally, and its very hard t control.

I'm 16 and being able to buy no alochol until you're 21 is stupid. I've drank alcohol before and, no, people below the age of 21 should not go running around buying unlimited alcohol, but a couple drinks a week should be allowed.

Well here in the UK the legal age is 18 and they are talking about raising it because of children as you as 12 getting their hands on it and the increasing problem of binge drinking.
